Best 240V Mini-Splits for Garages

If you want a garage that's usable in August and January, a 240V mini-split is the move. No ductwork, no tying into the house system, and the 240V units actually have the muscle a garage needs. The 120V ones are fine for a small room. A garage with a big metal door and zero insulation is not a small room.

Why 240V over 120V

A garage is a worst-case load. The door is a giant uninsulated panel, the slab soaks up cold, and most of them were never sealed for conditioning. A 120V 12k unit will run flat-out and still lose the fight on a 95°F afternoon.

The 240V units (18k BTU and up) pull more amperage and hold capacity when it's actually hot or cold out. That's the whole point.

What I install and why

  • Mitsubishi MZ series — the one I put in my own shop. Quiet, the Hyper-Heat versions genuinely work in the cold, and parts are easy to get.
  • Daikin Aurora — strong cold-weather performance, usually a bit cheaper than the Mitsubishi.
  • Mr. Cool DIY — the one homeowners ask about because you can install it yourself with the pre-charged line set. It works. It's not as efficient or as quiet, and you give up some cold-weather punch. For a hobby garage on a budget, fine.

Sizing, roughly

For a typical two-car garage (400 to 500 sq ft) that's poorly insulated, I'm putting in an 18,000 BTU unit. Three-car or a workshop you're heating hard in winter, step up to 24k. Don't oversize hoping for "extra" — an oversized unit short-cycles and never dehumidifies right.

The part people forget

You need a 240V circuit out there. A lot of garages only have a single 120V 20-amp run feeding the opener and a couple outlets. Budget for an electrician to pull a dedicated circuit, or you're not running this thing. If your panel's already full, that's a bigger conversation.
