Your air conditioner doesn't just die one Tuesday in July. It gives you signs. The trick is noticing them before you're staring at an invoice that starts with a two and has three more digits after it.
It's peak season right now, so if your unit's already limping, you're competing with every other callback for a slot on the schedule. I just watched a guy find out his capacitor's been slowly failing since May — could've been a $40 part and a half-hour visit. Now it's fried the compressor and he's looking at a full replacement in the middle of a heat wave, paying whatever the market will bear because he needs cold air yesterday.
Let's talk about what to look for while you still have options.
The Stuff You Can Actually Hear and See
Weird noises aren't "character." They're your system telling you something's wearing out or coming loose.
Grinding usually means a motor bearing. Squealing can be a belt (if you've got a belt-drive blower) or sometimes the blower wheel itself rubbing. Clicking that won't stop often points to a relay or contactor chattering — that's an electrical component trying to engage and failing. Hissing? Refrigerant leak, and you need to deal with that now, not later.
Smells matter too. Burning electrical smell means shut it down and call someone today. Musty or moldy odors mean you've got moisture where you shouldn't — could be a clogged condensate drain, could be mold in the ducts or on the coil. That acetone or chemical smell? Also refrigerant. Your nose knows more than you think.
Check your vents for weak or uneven airflow. One room not cooling can be ductwork, but if the whole house feels anemic, you're looking at a blower issue or a filter that's been neglected into oblivion. Pull that filter. If you can't see light through it, it's been choking your system and making the blower work twice as hard.
The Numbers Don't Lie
Your power bill is diagnostic data you're already paying for.
Compare this June to last June. If it's up 20-30% and your usage hasn't changed, your AC is pulling more watts to do the same job. That's efficiency loss — dirty coils, low refrigerant, a compressor working too hard, or a blower motor on its way out. Refrigerant doesn't get "used up" like gas in a car. If it's low, you have a leak, and just topping it off without fixing the leak is throwing money into the yard.
Thermostat settings matter more than people think. If you're running it at 68° all day to barely keep the house at 74°, your system is undersized, failing, or both. A healthy AC in decent conditions should be able to hold setpoint without running nonstop. If it's cycling on and staying on for 45 minutes at a stretch in moderate weather, that's a red flag.
Short cycling is worse — if it's kicking on for five minutes, shutting off, then firing again ten minutes later, you've got a problem. Could be a fouled coil, bad thermostat, refrigerant charge issue, or an oversized unit that was wrong from the start. Either way, it's killing your compressor.
Go Look at the Outdoor Unit
Right now. I'll wait.
The condenser outside should have clean fins and clear space around it. If the fins are packed with cottonwood fluff, grass clippings, or just years of grime, your system can't reject heat. It'll run hot, work harder, and fail sooner. You can hose them off gently from the inside out — don't use a pressure washer, you'll just fold the fins over. If they're already bent, a fin comb is like eight bucks and worth having.
Check that the fan's spinning when the unit runs. If it's not, the fan motor's gone or the capacitor that starts it is shot. Capacitors are a common summer failure — they're cheap parts that wear out from heat cycling, and a dual-run cap runs maybe $30-50 installed. But if it takes out the compressor before you catch it, you're in four-figure repair territory or looking at replacement.
Look for oil spots or refrigerant stains around the fittings. That's where leaks show up first. You might see a dark residue or actual oil pooling. Refrigerant itself doesn't leave a stain, but the oil it carries does.
Listen for the compressor. Humming that doesn't turn into running means it's trying to start and can't — locked rotor, bad capacitor, or the compressor's seized. Any of those outcomes is bad.
Inside the Air Handler
If you've got attic or closet access to your air handler, pop the door and look while it's running. I've seen drain pans full of standing water because the condensate line's clogged — that water's going to overflow into your ceiling or grow mold on your coil. The drain line should drip steadily outside when the AC's running in humid weather. If it's not, it's clogged.
The evaporator coil should be cold but not iced over. Ice on the coil means airflow's blocked (filter, usually) or you're low on refrigerant. Either way, shut it off and let it thaw before you run it again or you'll slug the compressor with liquid refrigerant and kill it. This is the failure mode I see most often from guys who "just keep running it" because it's hot outside.
Blower wheel should spin free and be clean. If it's caked with dust, it's not moving air. If it wobbles, the bearing's shot.
The Stuff You Can't DIY
Refrigerant charge has to be checked with gauges and manifold gear. You can't eyeball it. If you're noticing the symptoms — reduced cooling, icing, high bills, hissing — call for service. The EPA requires certification to handle refrigerant, and for good reason. This isn't a YouTube-and-a-Saturday kind of fix.
Same with electrical. Capacitors and contactors can kill you if you touch the wrong thing. If you hear clicking or buzzing from the electrical panel or the disconnect box outside, or if you smell burning, call a tech. I've seen contactors welded shut from arcing, and the system just runs until something else melts.
Compressor diagnosis takes tools and experience. You can't guess. If it's not starting, not pumping, or the amp draw's off, that's a tech with a meter.
What Actually Prevents Breakdowns
Maintenance. Boring answer, correct answer.
Spring maintenance is the time to catch this stuff, but we're past that now. If you didn't get a tune-up in April, you're rolling the dice. A decent service call includes checking refrigerant charge and pressures, cleaning coils, testing capacitors and contactors, checking amp draws on the motors, inspecting ductwork, and clearing the drain line. That's $120-200 depending on market, and it's the difference between a system that lasts 15 years and one that dies at 9.
If you're in the middle of summer and things are already acting up, don't wait for total failure. A struggling AC will cost you more in power bills while you debate calling someone than the service call would've cost in the first place.
And if a tech tells you the compressor's shot, get a second opinion on whether it's worth fixing or time to replace the whole system. A $1,800 compressor replacement on a 12-year-old R-22 system is usually throwing good money after bad. A five-year-old unit with a warranty compressor? Different math.
The One Thing I'll Add
It should be harder to buy HVAC equipment online.
I've seen too many homeowners try to save a buck by ordering a condenser off the internet and hiring the cheapest guy on Craigslist to install it. No load calc, no permit, wrong refrigerant charge, no commissioning. Then they call six months later wondering why it doesn't cool and their power bill's through the roof. Equipment's only half the job. Installation and setup matter as much as the box itself.
You don't have to like what a good HVAC outfit charges. But you'll like eating a compressor replacement in July even less.
