# Summer 2026 Electrical Reality Check: Your Service Panel Is About to Get Tested

If you haven't thought about your panel capacity lately, the next two months will do that for you. AC season is here, and the grid operators are already sweating it.

I've been pulling permits and upgrading services all spring. The calls haven't stopped. Half of them start the same way: breaker keeps kicking when the AC runs, or the lights dim every time the compressor fires. It's summer load in an electrical system sized for October.

What the Grid Guys Are Saying

PJM just published their summer readiness numbers. They're sitting on 180,200 MW of installed generating capacity across their footprint, which sounds like a lot until you realize how many more heat pumps and EVs came online since last summer. The California ISO is running similar math on the West Coast.

They'll keep the lights on — that's their job — but your 100A service panel with a 30-year-old AC unit and three window units daisy-chained off one circuit? That's on you.

The PUCs are releasing these readiness reports because they have to show the math works at the generation level. What they don't report is how many residential panels are actually sized right for the loads we're putting on them now.

The AC Circuit Problem Nobody Wants to Hear About

Your central AC should be on its own circuit. Not sharing with the bathroom. Not tapped off the kitchen. Its own wire, its own breaker, rated for the compressor's locked-rotor amps plus a safety margin.

Most installs get this right when the AC is new. But I see a lot of systems where someone added capacity over the years — replaced a 2-ton with a 4-ton, threw in a mini-split for the addition, kept the old circuit. Now you're pulling 35 amps on a 30-amp breaker when both units cycle on together. Physics doesn't care what worked last year.

Check the data plate on your condenser. It'll list minimum circuit ampacity and max fuse or breaker size. If the breaker in your panel is smaller than the MCA, you're out of spec. If it's bigger than the max, you're also out of spec — and your insurance adjuster will find that after the fire.

And for the love of all that's holy, if you're still running AC through an extension cord to "see if it works" before you call an electrician, just stop. I pulled one of those cords out of a wall last month. The jacket was melted to the sheathing inside the romex. The homeowner thought the burnt smell was normal.

Generator Installs: March Was the Time, August Is Just Expensive

The Kohler buying guide pegs March-April as the window for getting a standby generator installed before storm season. That ship sailed. If you're calling now, you're looking at a six-week lead time minimum, and most decent installers are booked into September.

I'm not saying don't do it. I'm saying you're going to pay a premium and you might not get a choice of install dates.

Milwaukee just dropped a big roll-on battery power supply unit — the gas-free portable angle is getting real traction for smaller backup needs. I haven't run one hard yet, but the specs are there: high-capacity, no fuel, no exhaust, you can run it indoors during an outage. If you don't need whole-house and you're tired of dealing with gas cans and carb cleanings, it's worth looking at. Beats the hell out of consumer-grade portable generators that sit in the garage for three years and won't start when you actually need them.

Standby units are still the right call for critical loads — medical equipment, well pumps, the whole HVAC system. But size it honestly. Load calculations matter. A 20kW unit sounds impressive until you realize it won't carry two ACs, the range, and the dryer all at once. The transfer switch doesn't care about your optimism.

Ceiling Fans and the Wiring People Get Wrong

Ceiling fans pull next to nothing — 75 watts is typical, maybe 100 for the big ones with lights. They're not your load problem.

The wiring is.

I've lost count of how many ceiling fans I've found hung on a fixture box rated for 35 pounds. The fan weighs 45. The box is held in by two drywall screws because somebody decided the joist was too far over. Sooner or later it's coming down, and when it does it'll take the drywall and maybe part of your face with it.

Use a proper fan-rated box. Nail it to the framing or use a brace bar between joists. If you're replacing an old fixture with a fan and the box moves when you tug on it, don't hang the fan. Fix the box first.

The switched-leg wiring is the other thing. Lots of older homes have switch loops that don't include a neutral at the switch box — just a hot and a switched hot. That's fine for a dumb switch. It is not fine for a smart fan controller or anything with a wireless module. They need a neutral to power the radio. You'll either need to pull new wire or use a battery-powered remote. Don't try to use the ground as a neutral. I've seen it. It sort of works until it doesn't, and then it works as a great way to energize the entire metal housing of your fan.

What Actually Fails in the Heat

Breakers get tired.

A breaker that's been clicking on and off at its rated load for 20 summers develops a kind of mechanical fatigue. The bimetal strip that trips it gets weaker. It'll start nuisance-tripping under loads it used to handle fine, or worse, it won't trip when it should.

If you've got a breaker that keeps kicking and you've verified the load is legit, replace the breaker. They're wear items. A new Square D Homeline breaker is $8. A service call to troubleshoot a phantom trip after the breaker welds itself shut is $300 plus the breaker.

Aluminum wiring is the other summer casualty. If you've got it — and houses from the late '60s through mid-'70s often do — every connection is a potential hot spot. The aluminum oxidizes, resistance goes up, heat builds, connections loosen, more heat. It's a runaway process. You'll smell it before you see it, usually. Hot plastic, burning dust, that specific electrical tang.

If your outlets are warm to the touch or you see discoloration around the screws on a switch, kill the circuit and call somebody. This isn't a YouTube diagnosis.

The 2026 NEC Load Calculation Stuff

The new code cycle updated demand factors and how we calculate service loads for existing panels. It's cleaner math, better recognition of controlled loads — stuff like EV chargers that can be managed or time-shifted — and a more realistic framework for what actually happens vs. worst-case everything-on-at-once scenarios.

For working electricians, it means the load calc on a service upgrade has a bit more nuance. For homeowners, it means you might not need a 200A panel when 150A would do if the loads are calculated honestly and some of them are smart/managed.

But that only matters if someone actually does the math. A lot of panel swaps still get sized by gut feel and whatever's in the truck. Do the calc. It's not hard, and it keeps you out of trouble with the inspector and the utility.

Worth It?

If your AC is kicking breakers, fix it now. It's not going to get cooler.

If your panel is full and you're shopping for spaces, it's time for a service upgrade. Not a tandem-breaker hack, not "just this one more thing," an actual upgrade with a load calc and a permit.

Generator installs are pricey and slow right now. If you can wait until fall, wait. If you can't, accept the lead time and the cost. Battery backup is getting real, but it's still a different use case — don't expect a Milwaukee roll-on to carry your house for three days.

Ceiling fans won't overload your panel, but the box they're hanging from might be garbage. Check it. Takes ten minutes and might save you from explaining to your spouse why there's a hole in the ceiling and a fan on the couch.

Summer's already here. The grid will probably hold. Your house wiring might not. That's the gap we get paid to fill.
