Summer Heat Cooks Your Roof From Both Sides — Here's What's Actually Happening Up There

Your roof is taking a beating right now. Not from wind or hail, but from thermal load you can't see.

Most homeowners think sun damage is just fading or a little wear. It's not. Sustained high temperatures — especially when trapped underneath by lousy attic ventilation — crack, curl, and age asphalt shingles faster than anything except maybe a tornado. I've torn off 12-year-old roofs in July that looked 25 because the attic was a convection oven and nobody caught it.

It's not one thing. It's the cycle: UV bombardment from above, superheated deck from below, thermal expansion and contraction every single day. Rinse and repeat all summer. The shingle never gets a break.

What Actually Happens When Heat Hits Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are petroleum-based. They're flexible when they're new because of the oils in the asphalt and the mat structure. Heat drives those volatiles out. Once they're gone, the shingle goes brittle.

You'll see it as curling first — edges lift or the whole tab cups. That's the asphalt mat shrinking unevenly as it dries out. High temps accelerate it. So does UV. But the killer is when your attic hits 150°F or 160°F because there's no airflow, and that heat radiates back up into the deck and cooks the shingle from underneath. It's like putting it in a slow oven.

Granule loss follows. The ceramic granules embedded in the surface are what protect the asphalt from UV and give the shingle its fire rating. As the asphalt binder oxidizes and gets brittle, it stops holding those granules. They start washing into your gutters. You'll see bald spots, especially on south and west slopes. Once the mat is exposed, degradation goes exponential.

I've pulled tabs off a roof in August that just crumbled in my hand. No flexibility left at all. The homeowner thought it was fine because it wasn't leaking yet. It was six months from a disaster.

The Attic Ventilation Problem Nobody Wants to Hear About

Here's the thing everyone skips: your attic is supposed to breathe. Intake at the soffits, exhaust at the ridge or through box vents. Hot air rises and pulls in cooler air from below. When that system is blocked or undersized, you trap heat. And that heat has nowhere to go except into the roof deck.

I see it constantly. Soffit vents packed with blown insulation because some hack just dumped cellulose in there with no baffles. Ridge vent installed but the ridge board was never cut, so it's decorative. Gable vents fighting with ridge vents and creating dead zones. Box vents spaced wrong. It's a mess.

A properly vented attic in summer should be maybe 10 or 15 degrees over ambient. I've been in attics in July that were 160°F when it was 95°F outside. That roof is dying.

Check your soffits right now. Go outside, look up. Are they screened and open, or are they solid? If they're vented, stick your hand up there. You should feel air. If it's dead, your insulation is probably choking it off inside.

Then get in the attic if you can stand it. Do you have baffles between every rafter bay at the eaves to keep a clear path for air? Is your ridge vent actually open to the attic space? Can you see daylight through it from inside? If not, you're cooking your roof and you don't even know it.

Shingle Curling Is Your Canary

When tabs start lifting at the edges or the whole shingle cups upward, that's not cosmetic. That's structural failure in progress.

Curling happens because the asphalt is shrinking as it loses volatiles and flexibility. It can't lay flat anymore. Once a shingle curls, it's also way more likely to catch wind and tear off. And the exposed edges crack easier when they're brittle.

You'll see it worst on the south and west slopes — the ones taking the most thermal load. If your attic ventilation is bad, you might see it on north slopes too, because the heat is coming from below.

There's no fix. You can't glue them back down. A curled shingle is a dead shingle. If you've got widespread curling and the roof is under 15 years old, I'd be checking that attic ventilation hard, because the next roof is going to do the same thing if you don't fix the airflow.

What You Can Actually Do Right Now

Walk the perimeter of your house. Look up at the eaves. Soffits should be vented and unobstructed. If you've got trees scraping the roof, get them trimmed back. Branches that rest on shingles or drag across them in the wind are tearing off granules and trapping moisture. That's separate from heat damage but it compounds it.

Get in the attic on a hot afternoon if you can tolerate it. Bring a flashlight. Look for:

  • Daylight coming through the ridge. If the ridge vent is there but you can't see light through the slot, it was installed wrong.
  • Clear airflow channels at the soffits. Insulation should stop short or have baffles holding it back.
  • Any signs of deck staining or past leaks. Dark streaks on the underside of the deck can mean the shingles above are failing.

If your attic is a sauna and you can't figure out why, call someone who actually understands ventilation. Not every roofer does. I've seen plenty of guys throw a ridge vent on a roof and call it a day without checking intake or doing the net free area math.

For the shingles themselves, you're looking for granule loss in the gutters, bald spots on the tabs, and any curling or cupping. A little granule loss in the first year or two is normal — those are the loose ones from manufacturing. A steady stream every summer, or big bald patches, is not.

The Real Cost of Doing Nothing

Heat damage is incremental until it's not. You'll get a few years of slow curling and granule fade, and then one summer it crosses a line. Tabs start blowing off in a thunderstorm. You get a leak. By the time it's obvious, you're usually past the point of a repair holding you more than a season or two.

I tore off a roof last August — architectural shingles, supposedly 30-year — that was 11 years old. The attic was unvented. Not poorly vented, *un*vented. Somebody converted it to conditioned space and sealed everything without adding any mechanical ventilation. The shingles on the south slope were curled like potato chips and had almost no granules left. The north slope still looked decent. It didn't matter. Whole thing had to go.

That's a $15K mistake that could've been caught with a $200 attic fan and some baffles if anyone had looked in the first five years.

Worth It or Not

If your roof is under ten years old and you're seeing curling or heavy granule loss, you've got a ventilation problem. Fix it now, because your next roof will cook just as fast if you don't. If you're shopping for a new roof this summer, make the roofer explain the ventilation plan in detail before you sign. Net free area calcs, intake-to-exhaust ratio, baffle plan if you've got insulation at the eaves. If they look at you like you're speaking Greek, find someone else.

If your roof is over 15 and starting to show its age, this is just part of the deal. Asphalt shingles have a service life, and heat is part of what runs that clock down. You can't stop it. You can only make sure you're not accelerating it with trapped attic heat and poor airflow.

Summer's doing the damage right now. If you're going to look, look now — not in October when it's comfortable and you've already burned through another three months of thermal cycling.
