Your sewer line is about to get wrecked by houseguests, your sprinkler system has leaks you can't see, and that garbage disposal is two cookouts away from grenading itself. Summer plumbing failures don't announce themselves until you're standing in a flooded basement or explaining to your in-laws why the toilet won't flush.
I've spent twenty summers pulling service calls that all started the same way: "It was fine yesterday." Yeah, it wasn't. You just didn't notice until fifteen people showed up for the Fourth of July and your 1980s cast iron finally gave up.
Here's what actually breaks in summer, why it happens now instead of January, and what you can do about it before it costs you four figures on a Saturday night.
The Sewer Line You Forgot You Had
Summer is when main sewer lines back up. Not because they suddenly fail — because you're using three times the water you use in March and the line that's been slowly clogging for two years finally can't keep up.
Houseguests are the trigger. Extra showers, laundry loads back-to-back, dishwasher running twice a day. All that water hits a pipe that's already narrowed by grease buildup, root intrusion, or a belly sag from settling, and you get a backup. Usually into the lowest drain in the house, which is often a basement floor drain or a first-floor toilet. Always at night. Always when you have company.
Tree roots go nuts in summer. They're hunting for water, and your sewer line is a 24/7 buffet. If you've got mature trees anywhere near your lateral — that's the line from your house to the street or septic — roots are already in there. They don't punch through solid pipe in one season. They work in through joints, cracks, or the seams on old clay tile, then grow like a net. By July they've matted up enough to catch everything that goes down.
The fix is a camera inspection and a cleanout, which runs $250-$400 depending on your market and how annoyed the plumber is about crawling under your deck to find the access. If roots are the problem, you're looking at mechanical cutting or hydro-jetting, and that's $400-$800. If the pipe is collapsed or offset, you're into excavation and replacement. Don't wait until you're flooded to find out which one you've got.
Tip from someone who's run the camera a hundred times: if you've got a cleanout plug you can access, pull it every couple years and look. You should see clear pipe. If you see roots, standing water, or crud, call before summer hits.
Your Garbage Disposal Is Not a Trash Can
People treat disposals like a black hole in summer. Corn husks, watermelon rinds, potato peels, celery strings, grease from the grill pan — all of it goes down because you're cooking for a crowd and the trash is already full.
Then it jams. Or it just stops, reset button won't do anything, and you're staring into a sink full of grey water with bits of onion floating in it.
The #1 failure mode is the flywheel locking up because something fibrous wrapped around it or a pit dropped into the grinding chamber. Celery and corn husks are the worst. They don't grind — they turn into string and bind everything. If you're lucky, you can free it with an Allen wrench from below (most units have a hex socket on the bottom for manual rotation). If the motor's burned out from stalling, you're replacing the unit, and that's $150-$300 for a mid-grade disposal plus an hour of labor if you're paying someone.
The other summer killer is grease. I know you know this. Doesn't matter — people still pour burger fat and bacon grease down the drain because it's liquid when it's hot. Then it hits the trap, cools, and turns into a waxy plug. That plus coffee grounds and pasta starch and you've got a clog that a plunger won't touch. You're into snaking the drain or pulling the trap, and that's a callback I get three times a week in July.
Run cold water when you use the disposal, not hot. Cold keeps grease solid so it gets chopped and flushed instead of coating your pipes. And run the water for 15 seconds after you shut off the grinding — long enough to clear the trap. Most people flip the switch and walk away with food still sitting in the line.
If your disposal is more than ten years old, just replace it before it fails. Newer units have better motors, more stainless in the grinding chamber, and they don't cost enough to justify nursing a dying one through another season.
Sprinkler Systems Leak Underground Where You Can't See Them
You'll notice your water bill in August. By then you've been hemorrhaging 10-15 gallons an hour into the dirt for six weeks.
Underground sprinkler leaks are invisible until they're catastrophic. A cracked lateral line, a blown fitting, a head that sank and cracked at the riser — all of it just dumps water into the soil. If you've got sandy or well-draining dirt, you'll never see a wet spot. The water percolates down and you get a bill for 30,000 gallons you didn't know you used.
Walk your zones. Every couple weeks, run the system during the day and actually watch it. Look for:
- Heads that don't pop up or only come halfway.
- Geysers or fountains where a head used to be.
- Uneven spray patterns, especially if one zone is misting while another is shooting.
- Soggy spots or really green patches that stay wet.
- Pressure drop across the zone — if the last three heads barely spit, something upstream is leaking and robbing pressure.
PVC fittings fail from freeze-thaw cycles (even if you blew out the lines, trapped water can crack a joint), soil settling, or just age. Swing joints on the heads crack if someone runs over them with a mower or they shift in the ground. If you're on a well, pressure surges from the pump cycling can hammer fittings until they weep.
Fixing a lateral line usually means digging, cutting out the bad section, and gluing in a new piece. It's not complicated if you can find the leak. If you can't, you're either hiring someone with a leak detection rig (acoustic sensors, tracer gas, sometimes ground-penetrating radar for big systems), or you're digging exploratory holes until you find the wet one. That gets expensive fast.
Sprinkler blowouts are a fall job, but if you're new to a house and don't know if the last guy did it, check your system now. If there's still water in the lines from last year, you've probably got cracks waiting to open up under pressure.
Water Heaters and Vacation Mode (Which Doesn't Exist on Most Units)
If you're leaving for a week or two in summer, you'll see advice online about putting your water heater in "vacation mode" to save energy. That's fine if you have a newer unit with an actual vacation setting — usually a button or a mode on the controller that drops the tank to around 50°F to prevent bacterial growth but doesn't keep it at full temp.
Most water heaters don't have that. What they have is an on/off switch or a thermostat you can turn down.
Here's what actually matters: if you're gone more than a few days, turning off a gas heater or flipping the breaker on an electric one will save you maybe $10-$15 in energy over two weeks. Not nothing, but not a game-changer. The bigger issue is what you come home to if something fails while you're gone.
A slow leak from a pressure relief valve, a failed drain valve, a tank that finally rusts through — any of those will flood your mechanical room or closet, and you won't know until you walk in the door and your floors are buckled. If you shut off the water supply *to the heater* (there should be a valve on the cold inlet), you eliminate that risk. The tank can fail, the valve can weep, whatever — no water is feeding it, so it can't flood.
I shut off the supply and leave the heater on low when I'm gone. The standing water in the tank stays warm enough to prevent stagnant smell and Legionella growth, but nothing's feeding it under pressure. When I get back, I open the valve and I'm good in twenty minutes.
If you fully shut down a gas heater, relight the pilot when you get back — some older units don't have electronic ignition and the pilot goes out when you kill the gas. If you don't relight it, the tank goes cold, and cold water sitting for weeks in a tank is a bacteria incubator. You'll smell it.
AquaMotion just released an outdoor recirc pump this year designed for tankless installs on exterior walls. If you've got a tankless unit outside and you're running a recirculation loop for instant hot water, that pump should have a timer or a smart controller. Set it to shut off when you're gone — no point running it if no one's home, and it's one less thing cycling on and off.
Washing Machine Hoses Fail in Heat
Rubber supply hoses dry out, crack, and blow in summer. Not always, but often enough that it's the third most common call I get for sudden flooding after sewer backups and water heater failures.
The hoses sit in a hot laundry room or closet, they're under constant pressure (even when the machine is off, the supply valves are open and the hoses are pressurized), and they age. When they let go, they don't drip — they spray. Full household pressure, 50-70 psi, straight onto your floor until someone shuts off the valves or the main.
Replace rubber hoses with braided stainless steel. The outer braid contains a burst and usually limits it to a seep instead of a flood. They cost $20 for a pair and take ten minutes to swap. If the hoses on your machine are older than five years or you don't know how old they are, change them now. Do it on a weekday when you're home, because sometimes old hoses are fused onto the machine threads and you'll snap the plastic inlet trying to get them off. Better to find out now than when you're trying to leave for vacation.
Shut off the valves when you go out of town. Single-lever quarter-turn ball valves are the easiest — just flip them perpendicular to the pipe. If you've got old-school multi-turn gate valves and they haven't been touched in ten years, don't force them. They'll snap off at the packing nut and you'll have a bigger problem.
The Drains That Can't Keep Up With Summer Use
Kitchen sinks and main floor bathrooms take a beating in summer. More people, more meals, more showers. Drains that were slow in April are clogged by July.
The trap under your kitchen sink is probably coated with a layer of grease, soap scum, and food particles that's been building since you moved in. It narrows the pipe enough that normal flow is fine, but heavy use overwhelms it. Same with shower drains — hair and soap combine into a mat that builds up until flow backs up into the pan.
Pull your traps and clean them. Under the kitchen sink, put a bucket underneath, unscrew the slip nuts on the P-trap, pull it off, and scrape it out. It's nasty. Do it anyway. You'll pull out a quarter-inch of grey sludge that smells like death. Rinse it, reassemble, done. Takes fifteen minutes and it's free.
For shower drains, pull the strainer and fish out the hair clog with a Zip-It tool or a bent coat hanger. If that doesn't do it, you're into snaking the drain or pulling the trap (if you can access it from below). Most tub/shower traps are buried in the slab or the floor joist bay and you're not getting to them without cutting drywall. If it's that bad, call someone with a snake.
Don't use Drano. I know it's tempting. It doesn't work on grease clogs, it can melt older PVC if it sits too long, and if it doesn't clear the line, now you're snaking a drain full of caustic lye soup that splashes back on you. Mechanical clearing works, chemicals are a gamble.
What Actually Saves You Money
Small leaks in older homes add up. A dripping faucet wastes 3,000 gallons a year. A running toilet wastes 200 gallons a day. A weeping pressure relief valve on a water heater dumps until you replace it or the tank fails. All of that hits your water bill and your sewer bill (because most municipalities charge sewer based on water use), and you're paying to waste it.
Fix the drip. Replace the flapper. Swap the PRV. None of it is expensive if you catch it now. All of it is expensive if you ignore it until something else breaks and you're paying a guy $150 just to show up on a Sunday.
Old homes have old pipes. If you're in a house built before 1970 and you've never had the main stack scoped, you should. Cast iron lasts 50-70 years before it starts to go. Galvanized steel lasts about the same, less if your water is acidic. If your pipes are original, they're on borrowed time, and the first sign of failure is usually a backup you didn't see coming. A camera inspection is $300. A sewer line replacement is $8,000-$15,000 depending on depth and access. Do the math.
What to Check Right Now
You're already in summer. If you haven't done this yet, do it before the weekend when people are coming over:
- Run every sprinkler zone and watch for leaks, low pressure, or heads that don't pop.
- Clean your disposal or replace it if it's older than your last two cars.
- Pull your kitchen sink trap and clean it.
- Replace washing machine hoses if they're rubber or older than five years.
- Shut off water to appliances if you're leaving town for more than a few days.
- Check your water heater for rust staining, drips at the valves, or a PRV that's weeping. If it's more than twelve years old, you're in the failure zone.
None of this is glamorous. It's not even interesting. But it's the difference between a $50 part and a $5,000 insurance claim, and I can tell you which one I'd rather deal with in July.
