# What's Actually Killing Your AC This Summer (And What You Can Do Right Now)

Your system's working harder than it ever has, and half the callbacks I'm running this week are the same four problems in rotation. Some are five-minute fixes. Some mean you're calling for a tech. Knowing which is which keeps you from melting while you wait for a guy to show up three days out.

It's June 2026, and if your AC stops working right now, you're joining a very long line. Let me walk you through what's actually going wrong out there, what you can check yourself, and where you need to just pick up the phone.

The Stuff That's Breaking This Week

I've seen the same issues on repeat since Memorial Day. Dirty filters, low refrigerant, coils that look like they've been through a sandstorm, and condensate drains backing up like a clogged gutter.

Start with the filter. I know, boring. But a choked filter is the number one reason a system can't move enough air to actually cool your house. If it's gray and matted, you're starving the blower. Change it. You should be doing this monthly when you're running hard anyway, and if you've got pets or you're in a dusty area, maybe every three weeks. A $4 filter beats a $200 service call.

Check your breaker next. A surge during a heatwave can trip it, and your system will shut itself down to keep from frying the compressor. If the breaker's off, flip it back. If it trips again immediately, stop — that's a short or a failing component, and you need someone with a meter.

Refrigerant: The Expensive One

Low refrigerant doesn't just mean your system's not cooling. It means there's a leak. R-22's been gone for years, and if you're still running an old system on it, you're looking at $150/lb or worse to top it off — when you can even find it. I saw a guy quoted $800 for three pounds last week. At that point, you're better off talking replacement.

410A systems leak too, usually at the flare fittings or where some hack didn't tighten a valve core correctly during install. You'll notice weak cooling first, then ice forming on the suction line or the evap coil. If you see frost, shut it down. Running it dry will kill the compressor, and that's a four-figure mistake.

A proper refrigerant check means gauges, not just a visual. If a tech shows up, doesn't pull any readings, and tells you everything's fine while your house is still 78 degrees, find a different tech.

Coils That Look Like They've Been Buried

The condenser coil outside gets beat to hell. Cottonwood, grass clippings, that mystery crud that sticks to aluminum fins like glue — it all chokes airflow. I pulled a unit apart two days ago in coastal NC that was two years old and the coil looked like steel wool. The one next to it, installed the same day, was clean. Only difference was prevailing wind direction and a row of shrubs dumping pollen on one and not the other.

You can rinse a coil with a garden hose from the inside out. Gently. Don't use a pressure washer unless you want to flatten every fin on there and make it worse. If it's caked solid, call somebody with coil cleaner and a fin comb. Bent fins kill efficiency, and you'll never get the airflow back without straightening them.

Evaporator coils inside are harder to reach, but they fail the same way: dust and restricted airflow. A coil that's producing a gallon of condensate every thirty minutes and sweating through the plenum is either freezing up from low airflow or you've got a refrigerant problem that's dropping the temp too far. Both need a tech.

The Condensate Drain Is Probably Clogged

This one sneaks up. The drain line that carries moisture away from your evap coil grows algae in the heat. It starts as a thin sludge, then it plugs completely, and suddenly you've got water backing up into the pan and tripping the float switch. System shuts down, you're hot, and you're convinced something major broke.

Most of the time, it's a clog. You can try pouring a cup of white vinegar or a little bleach down the drain line to kill the growth, but if it's already plugged solid, you need a shop vac or a tech with a pump to clear it. There are inline traps that help, and some systems have clean-outs you can pull and flush. If you've got access, check it now before it becomes an emergency.

Thermostats Lie

Or they're just old and miscalibrated. If your thermostat says 72 but the room feels like 76, it's reading wrong or it's mounted somewhere stupid — near a window, above a heat source, in direct sun. That throws the whole system off. It'll short-cycle or run forever trying to hit a target it can't measure accurately.

Newer smart stats are better, but they also fail. Batteries die. Wi-Fi drops. The algorithm decides you don't actually want cooling at 3 PM because you're "usually gone." I've ripped out two Nests this month and put dumb Honeywells back in, and the customers were happier.

For summer, set it and leave it alone. The "turn it up when you leave to save money" thing works in theory, but if your system has to claw the temperature back down from 82 to 70 in a poorly insulated house, you're not saving anything. You're just making the compressor run flat-out for two hours. Find a set point you can live with and let it maintain. 74 or 75 is realistic if your system's sized right. If you're trying for 68 in a Texas summer with a builder-grade 13 SEER unit, you're going to be disappointed.

When It Just Stops

AC cuts out completely, middle of the day, no warning. Could be the contactor, the capacitor, the compressor itself, or a safety that tripped because something's already wrong. Contactors wear out — the points pit and they won't pull in. Capacitors fail more in heat, and a bad start cap means the compressor hums but won't spin. Both are cheap parts if you catch them. A dead compressor is not.

If you hear clicking from the condenser but the fan and compressor aren't running, it's likely a cap. If nothing happens at all, check your disconnect outside and your breaker inside. If those are good, it's time for a service call. Don't keep resetting things hoping it'll magically start. You'll make it worse.

The Stuff You Should've Done in April

I'll say it: a spring tune-up would've caught half of this. Dirty coils, low refrigerant, a failing contactor, a drain line that's starting to clog — a decent PM catches it before it's a problem. But we're past that now. You're in the middle of summer, and if your system's limping, you've got two choices: band-aid it to survive the next three months, or plan a replacement for fall when availability's better and prices drop.

If you're nursing an old R-22 system, just know you're on borrowed time. Parts are drying up, refrigerant's stupid expensive, and every repair is a debate about whether to sink more money into something that's going to die anyway. I replaced a 19-year-old Trane two weeks ago that had been refilled four times in three years. Customer finally did the math. Should've done it two fills ago.

What's Worth a Service Call Right Now

Low refrigerant. Anything involving electrical components you can't identify. A compressor that won't start or makes bad noises. A blower motor that's seizing. Frozen coils that won't clear after you've shut the system down for a few hours and checked the filter. Anything sparking or smoking. Don't be a hero. Call.

What you can handle: filters, drain lines if they're accessible, basic coil rinsing, breaker resets, thermostat batteries. That's it. The rest needs someone with tools and a license.

The Real Problem Nobody's Talking About

Systems are undersized or installed wrong in the first place. I've been in too many houses where the load calc was a guess, the ductwork leaks like a sieve, and the unit's been screaming for help since day one. You can't fix that with a tune-up. That's a design problem, and it means you're either living with it or you're gutting the install and starting over.

If your AC can't keep up on a 95-degree day and it's only a few years old, get a real load calc done. Not the back-of-napkin "tons per square foot" garbage. If the system's too small, you'll chase problems forever.

What I'm Seeing Right Now in '26

Callbacks are up. Way up. Some of it's aging equipment — we're six years past the big R-22 changeover and those replacement units are hitting their first round of wear. Some of it's poor maintenance because people got used to "set it and forget it" and never touched anything. And some of it's just bad installs finally showing their cracks.

I'm also seeing more DIY butchery than usual. YouTube taught a guy how to add refrigerant, but not how to pull a vacuum or check superheat, so now there's air in the system and it's not cooling right. That repair costs more than if he'd just called someone in the first place.

And if you've got an old Amana through-the-wall unit, check the recall list — there's a batch out there that doesn't meet UL electrical standards and they're pulling them. Not common, but if you've got one, you want to know.

Bottom Line for This Summer

Keep the filter clean. Rinse the condenser. Check the drain. Set the thermostat to something reasonable and stop touching it. If the system stops or ices up, call somebody. If it's just struggling to keep up and it's old, start shopping for a replacement in September when you're not competing with half your city for the same three install crews.

Worth it? Depends where you are and what's broke. A $150 cap and a coil cleaning beats sweating through July. A $2,000 compressor on a 15-year-old system does not. Have the conversation with your tech, and make them show you numbers — not just "it needs this." Good ones will. The rest are just guessing or selling.

Stay cool. Or at least cooler than the guy who ignored his filter for a year.
