# Your AC Probably Isn't Broken — It Just Hit Physics

The verdict up front: If your AC is running hard and still losing the fight when it's 98° out, that's not a breakdown — that's a design limit. Central air is engineered to pull about 20° below ambient. Meaning if it's triple-digits outside, your house is settling at 78–80° even with the thermostat screaming for 72°. That's not a service call. That's thermodynamics.

Now, if it's only hitting 85° inside on a 95° day, or the air coming out of the vents feels room-temp instead of cold, *then* we're talking about an actual problem.

The 20-Degree Rule (And Why It Matters This Week)

Most residential split systems are sized to maintain a 15–20° temperature differential between outdoor ambient and your return air. Go read the manual if you don't believe me — it's in there, buried under the warranty fine print. That delta is baked into the refrigerant charge, the evaporator coil size, the blower CFM, all of it.

So when we're sitting in the middle of another Summer 2026 heat wave and it's 102° at 3 PM, your system working perfectly will get you down to maybe 82° indoors. Set the thermostat to 68° all you want. The compressor will just run continuously, the power bill will spike, and you'll still be sweating.

I've done three no-cools this week that were just homeowners panicking because the app said the AC had been running for nine hours straight. Yeah. It's supposed to. It's hot.

When It's Actually Broken

That said, plenty of units *are* choking right now, because this is when every marginal problem that was lurking all spring finally shows up. Here's what actually breaks:

Low refrigerant. If the suction line isn't sweating and cold to the touch, or if you're seeing ice on the linesets or the evaporator coil, you've got a leak. Refrigerant doesn't get "used up" — if it's low, it's leaking. Usually at a flare fitting, a Schrader core, or a pinhole in the evap from formic acid corrosion. This one you can't DIY. Call it in.

Clogged filter or return. I pulled a filter last week that looked like a wool blanket. When the airflow drops, so does your capacity. The evaporator can't reject heat if there's no air moving across it. Check it. If it's grey, change it. And yeah, I know you just changed it in April — in summer you might need to swap every 30 days if you've got pets or you're running the system hard.

Dirty condenser coil. That's the outside unit. If the fins are packed with cottonwood fuzz, grass clippings, or two seasons of dust, the compressor can't dump heat. It'll run, but it's not doing anything useful. You can hit it with a hose from the inside out (gently, those fins are foil-thin) or call someone to chem-wash it. Don't use a pressure washer unless you want to spend the next hour straightening fins with a butter knife.

Dead or dying capacitor. If the compressor is humming but not starting, or if it's cycling on the overload every few minutes, the run cap is cooked. These fail more in heat. Cheap part, quick swap for a tech, but it'll strand you if it goes on a Friday afternoon in July.

Bad TXV. Thermostatic expansion valve. When these stick or fail, the refrigerant flow goes wrong and you lose cooling even though everything else looks fine. You'll see weird superheat numbers and the system hunting. Not a homeowner fix — requires a gauge set, a vacuum pump, and someone who knows what they're doing. Community's been seeing more of these this year, especially on Carrier and Payne units.

The Stuff Homeowners Do That Makes It Worse

Closing vents in unused rooms sounds smart. It's not. It screws up the static pressure, makes the blower work harder, and can freeze the evap coil because the air velocity drops. Leave them open.

Cranking the thermostat down to 65° hoping it'll "cool faster" doesn't work that way. The system runs at one speed (unless it's a variable model, and even then it's not linear). All you're doing is making it run longer. Set it to 78° and let it work.

Setting it way up during the day and then slamming it back down when you get home is a debated topic, but in a heat wave it usually just makes the system run all evening trying to catch up, which is the worst time because ambient is still high and the condenser is fighting. Better to let it hold a reasonable temp all day. You'll burn a little more power mid-day, but you won't come home to an 88° house.

And for the love of god, if you have a two-story house and it's hot upstairs, that's not the AC's fault. Heat rises. The return is downstairs pulling 74° air while the bedrooms are baking. Close the downstairs vents halfway, open the upstairs all the way, and run the fan on. Or get a mini-split for the second floor. That's the real fix.

What About the New SEER2 Units?

If you're shopping replacements this year, yeah, everything's labeled SEER2 and HSPF2 now under the 2023 DOE regs. Higher numbers are more efficient, but they don't change the laws of physics. A 16 SEER2 system in a heat wave is still hitting that same ~20° delta as the old 13 SEER unit it replaced — it's just doing it while pulling fewer amps. You'll see the savings on the power bill over a summer, not in some magic ability to hit 68° indoors when it's 105° out.

Worth upgrading if your current system is 15+ years old and refrigerant is getting expensive (or if it's an R-22 unit and you're tired of $150/lb recharges). But don't expect a new system to suddenly defy heat load calculations.

How to Get Through the Next Two Months

Set the thermostat to 78° and forget about it. If you're home and miserable, point a box fan at yourself. Moving air feels like 4–5° of cooling.

Change the filter now, and again in 30 days. Set a phone reminder.

If the outdoor unit is buried in shrubs or sitting in full afternoon sun with no airflow, clear it out. Twelve inches of clearance on all sides. That condenser needs to breathe.

Make sure the condensate drain line is flowing. If it plugs (and they do, especially if you've got algae or the trap dried out), the float switch will kill the system. Pour a cup of bleach down the drain line once a month.

Check the suction line. It's the bigger one, usually wrapped in foam insulation. It should be cold and slightly wet. If it's dry or room-temp, you've got a problem. If it's frozen solid, you've *definitely* got a problem. Either way, call it in.

If you're doing all that and the system's still only hitting 85° indoors when it's 95° out, you've either got a refrigerant leak, a failing compressor, or the system was undersized from the start. That last one is more common than you'd think — a lot of builders in the 2000s undersized systems to save a few hundred bucks, and it's been fine until heat waves became a weekly thing. Load calc apps are free, and if your unit is a half-ton or a ton short for your square footage, you'll never catch up in extreme heat.

When to Actually Call Someone

If the breaker's tripping, don't keep resetting it. You've got a short or a locked rotor.

If the compressor isn't running at all (and yes, you can tell — the fan on top spins, but the compressor is the loud part in the bottom of the can), that's a contactor, a cap, or the compressor itself. Not a DIY.

If you're smelling anything electrical, acrid, or burning, shut it down at the breaker and call.

If refrigerant is hissing or you see oil streaks on the lineset, it's leaking. Shut it down.

Everything else — filter, drain line, shade, thermostat settings — you can handle.

The system's going to run hard for the next eight weeks. That's expected. But if you're doing basic upkeep and it's still losing ground, don't wait until August to get it looked at. Everybody's backlogged right now and it's only going to get worse. I've got callbacks stretching into next week already, and it's not even the worst of it yet.
