I pulled a corn husk out of a garbage disposal last week that had been wound around the impeller ring so tight it seized the motor. Fourth of July cookout aftermath. The homeowner kept running it, heard the hum, figured it'd work itself out. Fifty bucks in parts, two hours of my time, and a lecture they didn't want to hear about what actually goes down a disposal.
Summer kills plumbing. Not slowly—fast and expensive.
The bottom line: Most summer plumbing disasters are predictable and preventable, but homeowners treat their systems like they're invincible during peak usage season. They're not. Here's what actually goes wrong when the temperature climbs and how to keep your weekend from turning into a four-figure service call.
The Garbage Disposal Graveyard
Summer cookouts murder garbage disposals. I see more seized units between Memorial Day and Labor Day than the rest of the year combined.
The disposal in your sink was not designed for corn cobs, chicken bones, watermelon rinds, or the potato peels from feeding twelve people. It handles daily food scraps. Maybe. The stress ramps up fast when you're hosting every weekend, and the failure modes are consistent: jammed impellers, burned-out motors, and—my personal favorite—the slow drain that turns into a full backup during your next big meal.
What actually jams them? Fibrous stuff winds around the impeller. Corn husks, celery strings, onion skins. Grease congeals in the trap and catches everything else. Fruit pits crack the impeller blades or wedge in the grinding ring. Pasta keeps expanding in the trap until nothing moves.
Run cold water. A lot of it. Before, during, and thirty seconds after you flip the switch. Cold water keeps grease liquid long enough to get down the line. Hot water melts it right into your trap.
Better move: put a compost bucket on the counter during cookouts and keep the big stuff out entirely. Disposals are for the bits you miss when scraping a plate, not for processing food waste at scale.
If it does jam, the reset button is on the bottom of the unit. Red button, usually. Press it after the motor cools. If that doesn't work, there's an Allen key socket in the center of the bottom—turn it back and forth to free the impeller manually. Kill the breaker first. I have seen what happens when someone reaches into a disposal that kicks on.
Sewer Line Backups Are Not Random
Roots don't take a summer vacation. They're most active when it's hot and they're hunting water.
I watched a guy pull a toilet last month and find roots growing *through* the wax ring, up into the bowl, and back down into the sewer line. Not around the flange. Through it. That's not bad luck—that's a cracked line that's been leaking for months, and the tree found it.
Summer is when you find out your sewer line has a problem, because summer is when you're running the most water. More showers after yard work. More laundry from pool towels. More dishes. The line that was handling 70% capacity all year hits 100%, and whatever's been narrowing the pipe—roots, a belly sag, old cast iron scaling up—finally chokes it off.
The tell is the lowest drain in the house. Usually a basement floor drain or the shower down there. If you see water backing up there when you flush the toilet upstairs, you've got a main line problem. If the kitchen sink gurgles when the washing machine drains, same thing. That's air being pushed back through the system because the vent can't do its job—the line's blocked.
Camera scopes are cheap now. A hundred bucks, maybe one-fifty, to stick a camera down your cleanout and see what you're dealing with. Way cheaper than an emergency dig-up on a Saturday night.
There's real progress happening on leak detection for multifamily setups—automated monitoring that catches problems before they turn into catastrophes—but single-family homes are still on their own. Which means: know where your main shutoff is and check your cleanout access once a year. If you don't have a cleanout, you're rolling dice every time something slows down.
Washing Machine Hoses Fail Spectacularly
Those rubber supply hoses on your washing machine have a lifespan. It's about five years, maybe seven if you're lucky. The rubber gets stiff, the internal reinforcement cracks, and one day the thing lets go while you're out running errands.
Hundreds of gallons before you get home. I've seen it flood a basement three inches deep and wreck everything in the mechanical room. Insurance covers it, usually, but you're still dealing with demo and dry-out and replacement, and your premiums go up.
Braided stainless hoses are better. Not perfect—they can still fail at the crimped end—but better. Check them twice a year. Look for bulges, kinks, cracks in the rubber connector ends. If they're stiff or corroded at the threads, replace them. A pair of hoses runs twenty bucks. Mitigation after a flood runs five figures.
Auto-shutoff hoses exist. They have a spring-loaded valve that closes if it detects a pressure drop. I'm skeptical of the cheap ones—more points of failure—but the good ones work. If you're not home much or you're keeping a rental occupied, they're worth the hundred bucks.
And turn the valves off when you leave for more than a couple days. I know nobody does this. Do it anyway.
Sprinkler System Leaks Are Money Leaving Your Yard
Underground irrigation leaks are invisible until they're expensive. You'll get a water bill that's double, or you'll notice a soggy spot in the yard that never dries, or—if you're really unlucky—you'll find out when a section of your foundation settles.
Sprinkler heads take impacts all summer. Mowers, kids, dogs. The riser cracks below grade, and now you're watering a two-foot radius of dirt that doesn't need it while the zone runs. PVC lateral lines crack from freeze-thaw cycles or just from age, and they leak slow enough that you won't notice until the bill comes.
Walk your zones once a month while they're running. Look for geysers, puddles, heads that aren't popping up. Listen for hissing. Check your meter before and after a cycle—if it's still spinning after everything shuts off, you've got a leak somewhere.
The control timer matters too. Old mechanical timers stick, run zones too long, or don't shut off at all. The newer digital ones are better, but they eat batteries and glitch out if they lose power. I've seen systems run 24/7 because a lightning strike scrambled the board and the homeowner didn't notice for a week.
If you're leaving for vacation, either shut the system down at the backflow preventer or set it to run minimally. Grass can go a week without water. Your bank account can't handle a cracked lateral running wide open.
Water Heaters Don't Love Sitting Idle (Or Working Overtime)
This one cuts both ways depending on your summer.
If you're gone for two weeks, you've probably heard to flip your water heater to "vacation mode" or just turn it way down. Good advice. Saves energy, reduces scale buildup, keeps the tank from cycling for no reason. But—and this matters—do not turn it *off* entirely if you have a tank heater in a humid climate. Sitting full of lukewarm water in a hot basement or garage is how you grow Legionella. Vacation mode keeps it warm enough to stay sanitary, around 50-60°C, without running full blast.
If you're *staying* home and running the system hard—kids back from college, house full of guests, showers all day—you might be the guy who finds out your anode rod rotted out last year and now the tank's leaking from the bottom seam. Or the burner assembly on your gas unit is carboned up and can't keep pace. Or the lower element on your electric heater is dead and you've been running on half capacity for months without realizing it.
If you're getting lukewarm water at peak times this summer, check the temp setting (should be 120-130°F, not the 140 it was probably cranked to by the last guy who didn't know better), then check the breaker for a tripped limit switch on electric units. Gas heaters: make sure the burner flames are blue, not yellow and lazy. Yellow means incomplete combustion and soot buildup.
And flush the damn thing. Once a year, drain a couple gallons from the bottom valve to clear sediment. Takes ten minutes. Extends the life of the tank by years.
Outdoor Faucets and Hose Bibs Are Dumber Than You Think
Frost-free hose bibs are supposed to drain back into the house so they don't freeze and crack in winter. Great theory. In practice, people leave hoses attached all year, the bib can't drain, and it cracks internally where you can't see it.
Come summer, you turn it on for the first time and wonder why there's water dripping inside the wall. Because the valve seat or the vacuum breaker cracked six months ago and you're just now finding out.
Or you've got an old-school hose bib without a backflow preventer, and you left a sprayer attachment on the hose end sitting in a puddle. That's a cross-connection. If your supply pressure drops—water main break, fire hydrant use, whatever—you can siphon dirty water back into your house supply. Rare, but it happens. Some municipalities require backflow prevention on all outdoor outlets now. Check your local code.
Also: cheap brass hose bibs crack. The pot metal Chinese stuff that big-box stores sell for eight bucks will last two seasons if you're gentle. Spend thirty dollars on a Woodford or a Prier and forget about it for a decade.
The Most Ignored Thing: Main Shutoff Access
I can't tell you how many emergency calls I've run where the homeowner doesn't know where the main shutoff is, or they do know but it's buried behind storage in the basement, or they found it and the valve's seized because it hasn't been turned in ten years.
If a supply line lets go—and they do—you have about ninety seconds to kill the water before it's a real problem. You need to be able to reach that valve in the dark, half asleep, in a panic. And it needs to turn.
Find it. Clear a path to it. Turn it a quarter turn twice a year just to keep it from seizing. Put a tag on it. Tell your family where it is.
Ball valves are better than gate valves for this, but most older houses have gates. They're fine if you maintain them. If yours is a gate valve and it's weeping or won't turn, replace it. A plumber will charge you two-fifty, maybe three hundred. Do it on a Tuesday in May, not during a flood on Saturday night.
Summer Isn't Hard On Plumbing Because Of The Heat
It's hard on plumbing because you're *using* it harder. More people, more activity, more flow, more stress. Systems that coast through winter at half capacity hit their limits in July, and that's when the weak points show up.
Most of this is avoidable. Check your hoses, walk your sprinklers, scrape your plates before you grind, know where your shutoffs are. The emergencies I run in summer are almost never surprises to the system—they're surprises to the homeowner who wasn't paying attention.
