# Your AC Can't Keep Up — And It Might Not Be Broken
Walked into three callbacks last week that went the same way: homeowner standing there sweating, pointing at the thermostat set to 68°F, outdoor unit humming away, indoor temp stuck at 76. "It's not working."
Except it is working. It's just losing.
Here's what nobody wants to hear in the middle of a heat wave: central air can only pull indoor temps about 20 degrees below what's outside. That's not a defect. That's physics. When it's 98°F at 2 PM and your house has been baking since 10 AM, asking the system to hit 68 is like asking a half-ton pickup to tow a fifth-wheel up the Rockies — the machine will try until something gives.
I'm not saying your AC is fine. Plenty aren't. But before you drop two grand on a compressor or start shopping for a new condenser, let's sort out what's actually broken from what's just... summer.
The 20-Degree Rule (And Why It Matters Right Now)
Most residential splits are sized to maintain a delta-T of around 18–22 degrees between outside air and conditioned space. That's your *temperature differential*. On a 95-degree day, a properly functioning 3-ton unit should hold the house at 75, maybe 73 if it's well-insulated and the windows aren't getting direct sun all afternoon.
You want 68? You need a bigger system, better windows, or lower expectations.
I see guys get in trouble here all the time, especially the ones who came up in new construction where everything's sealed tight and the load calc was done right. Older houses leak. Attics cook. That 20-degree cushion disappears fast when you've got R-19 insulation from 1987 and a roof that hits 160 in the sun.
If your system's running non-stop but holding within that 20-degree window, it's not broken. It's just small for the load, or the house is working against it.
If it's *not* holding that window — if it's 95 out and you're sitting at 82 inside with the thing running full blast — then yeah, we've got a problem.
What Actually Fails in the Heat
Low refrigerant is the big one. A system that's even 10% low on charge will lose capacity. You'll hear the compressor running, feel weak airflow at the vents, maybe notice ice on the suction line if it's bad enough. That's not a "top it off" situation — refrigerant doesn't get used up. If it's low, there's a leak, and just adding a can of R-410A is a Band-Aid that'll cost you more in the long run when the compressor cooks itself.
I had a unit last summer that had been "topped off" three times by a hack before the homeowner called someone legit. Compressor seized two weeks later. That's a $1,800 lesson.
Dirty coils will kill you too, especially on the condenser. If that outdoor unit looks like it's growing a sweater, it can't reject heat. Capacity drops 20, 30 percent easy. You can hose it down yourself if you're careful — low pressure, spray from the inside out so you're not jamming debris deeper into the fins — but if it's caked on there, it needs a coil cleaner and a tech who knows not to bend every fin in the process.
Airflow problems show up as hot spots, weak vents, or that classic "it runs forever but never quite gets there" feel. Clogged filter's the easy one. Check it. If it looks like dryer lint, you found it. But undersized or crushed ducts, a blower that's slipping its belt (or failing if it's a PSC motor), even a return that's blocked by furniture — all of that starves the evaporator and kills your capacity.
TXV failures are getting more common, or at least more talked about. The thermostatic expansion valve meters refrigerant into the evaporator coil. When it sticks or drifts out of range, you get weird superheat, inconsistent cooling, maybe short cycling. Diagnosing it takes gauges and someone who actually knows what the pressures should be for the ambient and indoor conditions. Last company saying "bad TXV" might've been right. Or might've been guessing. That's the problem — it's an easy thing to blame when you don't feel like running a full diagnostic.
The Stuff You Can Actually Fix Right Now
Set the thermostat to 78 and leave it there. I know. I know. But if it's 99 outside and climbing, chasing 72 just makes the compressor run itself to death without ever catching up. Let the system work at a sustainable load. You'll be cooler than if it quits entirely.
Shade matters more than people think. If the condenser's sitting in direct sun all afternoon, it's trying to reject heat into 110-degree air instead of 95. A little shade structure (not tight against the unit, you need airflow) or even a strategically planted shrub three feet away can drop the head pressure and give you back some capacity. Don't cage it in, though. I've seen condensers choked by landscaping more times than I can count.
Close the vents and doors to rooms you're not using. Yeah, I've heard the arguments about static pressure and duct leakage. In a perfect world with a perfect system, you balance the zones and leave everything open. In a 1,400-square-foot house with one zone and a 2.5-ton unit that's underwater, closing off the guest bedroom might be the difference between 77 and 75 in the living room where you actually are.
Run the fan on AUTO, not ON. Constant fan circulation feels nice, but in humid climates it just re-evaporates the moisture that the coil worked to pull out. You end up with a clammy 76 instead of a crisp 76. Not a huge deal in Phoenix. Matters in Atlanta.
When to Actually Call Somebody
If the outdoor unit's not running at all, you've got electrical issues — contactor, capacitor, maybe the compressor itself. That's not a DIY unless you know what you're doing with a multimeter and 240V.
If it's blowing warm air instead of cool or cycling on and off every few minutes, something's wrong with the charge, the airflow, or the controls. Could be the TXV. Could be a refrigerant leak. Could be a clogged evaporator or a failed blower motor. You need gauges and someone who can read them.
If there's ice on the lines or the coil, shut it down and let it thaw before you do anything else. Running it frozen just makes it worse. Then figure out why: low charge, low airflow, or a stuck TXV are the usual suspects.
And if it's holding temp fine until the heat really spikes, then starts losing ground as the day goes on, you might just be undersized for the load. That's not something you fix with a repair. That's a sizing conversation, and one you don't want to have in July when every HVAC company's booked three weeks out and quoting you panic pricing.
The Bottom Line
A lot of "my AC isn't working" calls in the middle of summer are really "my AC is doing what it can, but the house and the weather are teaming up against it." That doesn't mean ignore it. But it does mean don't assume the compressor's shot just because it's 78 inside at 3 PM.
Check the filter. Check the coils. Set a reasonable thermostat target and give the system a chance to maintain instead of chase. If it's truly not keeping up — if you're outside that 20-degree window and the thing's running flat-out — then yeah, get someone out there with gauges and a clamp meter, not a hack with a can of refrigerant and a guess.
And if you're shopping for a new system because this one finally gave up? Size it right. Pay for the load calc. A 4-ton unit in a house that needs 2.5 tons doesn't cool better — it just short-cycles, doesn't dehumidify, and costs more to run. But that's a fall conversation, when you've got time to think and the installers aren't booked into September.
Right now, if it's running and you're not melting, call it a win and check back in October.
