# When Your AC Can't Keep Up: What's Actually Breaking This Summer

Your house is 81 degrees at 3 PM and the thermostat's been set to 74 since breakfast. Compressor's been running nonstop for six hours. This is the call I'm getting four times a day right now.

Let me say it straight: if your unit can't hold temp by more than 4-5 degrees when it's 95+ outside, something is wrong. Don't let anyone tell you "it's just hot out" and shrug. Heat is what these boxes are built for.

The Real Culprits When AC Won't Keep Up

Low airflow kills more cooling capacity than anything else, and it's what I find first on probably 60% of these calls.

Filter's the obvious one. Yeah, I know. But I pulled a filter last week that looked like dryer lint held together with hope — homeowner swore they changed it in spring. Even a partially loaded filter drops airflow enough that your evaporator coil can't reject heat properly, and the whole cycle goes to hell.

Coil itself might be the problem. If you've got pets, cottonwood, or you're downwind of a farm, that outdoor coil collects a fur-and-dust mat that acts like a blanket. I've seen units pull 20 amps on an 18-amp rated compressor just trying to move air through a clogged condenser. That's how you cook a capacitor or worse.

Blower wheel gets forgotten. Pull your furnace door and stick a light up there — if that squirrel cage looks fuzzy, it's moving maybe 70% of the CFM it should. Your evaporator's starving for air.

Refrigerant: The Expensive Guess

Low charge is the diagnosis every fly-by-night guy jumps to because it means a billable service call with a jug of 410A. But here's the thing: refrigerant doesn't just disappear. If you're low, you've got a leak. Topping it off without finding the leak is lighting money on fire.

That said, yeah, low refrigerant absolutely murders your capacity. You'll see it on the gauges — suction pressure in the basement, superheat through the roof — and the system just can't move heat. I had a unit last week running 40 degrees of superheat. Might as well have been blowing room-temperature air.

If someone wants to charge you $400 to add two pounds without even looking for the source, walk. A proper leak check with nitrogen and soap, or better yet a electronic sniffer, takes twenty minutes. The leak's usually at a braze joint or a Schrader valve. Fix it, then charge it.

The Stuff That Fails When It's Hot

Capacitors. Hands down.

Run capacitors are basically a wear item at this point, especially in the Sun Belt. They're rated for maybe 60,000 cycles, and when you're running 14 hours a day in July, you burn through that. A weak cap means your compressor can't start cleanly or your fan drags, and either way you're losing performance before the thing fails outright.

I keep a half-dozen in the van — 5µF through 50µF, covers most splits and package units. It's a $20 part. If your guy's charging you $400 for a capacitor swap, find a new guy.

Contactors get pitted from all the cycling. I've seen them weld shut — compressor just runs forever, can't be turned off from the thermostat. Or they get burned and won't pull in reliably, so you get that fun intermittent cooling where it works... until it doesn't.

Transformers on the low-voltage side cook when they've been fighting a short or a bad thermostat wire for months. You'll chase your tail on "system won't turn on" calls until you check the 24V supply and find you're only getting 18.

Thermostat Settings That Actually Matter Right Now

Set it to 78 and leave it. I'm serious.

The worst thing you can do during a multiday heat wave is try to fight your way down to 72 by cranking the setpoint. All you're doing is ensuring the compressor never cycles off, which means it never gets a break, which means you're cooking every component faster. Your compressor's not a diesel — it needs to rest.

If you've got a smart thermostat doing its "energy saving" thing where it lets the house drift to 85 while you're at work, then tries to recover when you get home? Turn that off in summer. Recovery pulls so much runtime you'd be better off holding temp all day. I know it sounds backwards. Check your utility data if you don't believe me.

And for the love of all that's holy, don't set it to 65 "so it cools faster." Doesn't work that way. It's a switch, not a throttle. You're just asking it to run longer.

What You Can Check Before You Call

Pull the disconnect at the outdoor unit, wait thirty seconds, flip it back on. Sometimes a hard reset clears a fault. If it fires up and runs normal, you bought yourself a day — but something made it trip, so don't ignore it.

Walk outside and listen. Compressor should hum, not buzz or rattle. Fan should spin freely — if it's struggling or making noise, bearing's going or the blade's hitting something.

Check your drains. If the evaporator coil's drain pan is full or the line's clogged, some units have a float switch that kills the system. I've driven thirty minutes for a "no cooling" call that was a blocked drain line and a stuck float.

Breaker panel: if you've got a double-pole breaker that's warm to the touch or tripped, don't just reset it. That breaker's telling you something downstream is pulling too much current.

The Stuff You Can't DIY

Refrigerant work requires an EPA 608 cert for a reason. If you're not pulling vacuum and weighing in the charge, you're guessing, and an overcharged system is just as useless as an undercharged one — worse, actually, because you can spike head pressure high enough to trip the high-pressure cutout or grenade a compressor.

Electrical diagnosis beyond the basic stuff gets sketchy fast. I'm comfortable pulling panels and checking contactors, but if you've got a compressor that won't start and you're not sure if it's the cap, the contactor, the start relay, or the compressor itself? You're into multimeter and clamp meter territory, and a mistake gets expensive in a hurry.

Ductwork leaks. If your system's sized right, charged right, and still can't keep up, you might be dumping 30% of your air into the attic through gaps at the plenum or boots that were never sealed. But finding and fixing that is a whole thing — I've seen crews spend a full day on a good duct seal job.

What's Worth It This Summer

If your system's over 12 years old and it's not keeping up, do the math before you pour money into it. A compressor replacement on a 15-year-old unit is $1,800–$2,500 around here, and you're still stuck with old everything else.

New condensing unit with a warranty starts at $3,500 installed for a basic 2.5-ton, and you know the next five summers are covered. I'm not saying upgrade for the hell of it, but if you're already on the hook for a grand in repairs, the math tilts fast.

Maintenance contracts are hit or miss. If it's a flat "$120/year and we come out twice," that's usually worth it just for the spring and fall checkups. Anything with a monthly payment or upsells baked in, read the fine print. I've seen plans that don't actually cover anything except showing up.

A good service call right now — someone who pulls the panels, checks the charge properly, tests the caps and contactor, cleans both coils, verifies airflow — should land around $150–$250 depending on your market. If they roll up, poke at it for ten minutes, and say "needs Freon" without showing you numbers, push back.

It's ugly out there right now. Every unit in the neighborhood's been cooking for three weeks straight. The ones that make it through are the ones that were clean, tight, and not running on borrowed time to start with.
