Your AC Can't Keep Up With the Heat — What's Actually Wrong and What You Can Do Right Now

It's hot. Your AC is running nonstop and the house is still 82 degrees. Palo Alto's baking, the thermostat's cranked down to 68, and you're wondering if you need to drop four grand on a new system or if your contractor's about to quote you $600 to swap a $12 capacitor.

Let's talk about what's realistic, what's broken, and what's just physics.

The 20-Degree Rule Nobody Tells You Until It's Too Late

Here's the thing most homeowners don't know: your AC can only pull about 20 degrees off the outdoor temp. That's not a failure. That's thermodynamics.

If it's 105 outside, a properly functioning system will get you to maybe 85 inside, and that's if your ductwork isn't leaking and your insulation isn't from 1987. The equipment isn't broken — it's just maxed out. During these 2026 heatwaves we've been seeing, I'm getting calls from people whose units are running fine but can't "win" against the sun. They're set to 68 and wondering why the compressor won't shut off. Because it can't. You're asking it to do something it was never spec'd to do.

Set it to 78 during peak heat and see what happens. I know that sounds warm. It is warm. But your system will actually cycle properly instead of running itself into the ground, and you might avoid a service call when the contactor welds itself shut from continuous duty.

What Actually Fails When It's This Hot

Capacitors go first. Always. They're cheap, they're heat-sensitive, and they fail more in summer than any other time. If your compressor is humming but not starting, or the fan isn't spinning, that's your likely culprit. It's a $12 part. Labor to replace it is another story — I've seen quotes from $150 to $600 depending on who shows up. The private equity-owned companies are the ones charging $600. You know who they are.

Contactors weld shut when they're asked to stay closed for 16 hours a day in 110-degree ambient. I pulled one last week that had fused into a solid block. Customer thought the unit was fine because it was still running. It was. It just wouldn't *stop* running, even with the thermostat off.

Refrigerant leaks show up now because the system's actually working hard enough to expose them. The Stuff You Can Check Before You Call

Filters. I know. Everyone says filters. Because it's true.

If you're running your AC daily in summer — and you are — that filter's getting loaded faster than the manufacturer's "change every 3 months" sticker suggests. A clogged filter cuts airflow, which cuts capacity, which makes the evaporator coil freeze, which makes you call me to tell me your AC is blowing warm air. Pull the filter. Hold it up to a window. If you can't see daylight through it, you're done. Replace it.

The outdoor unit. Walk outside. Look at the condenser. Is it buried in cottonwood fluff or shaded by a trash can someone parked there? Is the coil so packed with dirt that you can't see through the fins? Hose it down gently from the inside out. Don't use a pressure washer. You'll just fold the fins over.

Ductwork in the attic. If you've got flex duct in a 140-degree attic and half of it's come disconnected or compressed, you're paying to cool the rafters. I've seen installations where a third of the airflow never makes it to the living space. You're not going to fix that yourself in July, but you should know it's a thing.

When It's Actually Broken

If the unit won't start at all, you're likely looking at a capacitor, contactor, or a tripped breaker. If it's running but blowing warm air and the line set isn't cold, you've lost refrigerant or the compressor's on its way out.

If you've got a 13-year-old system and it's dying now, yeah, it picked the worst possible time, but that's when they go. Heat kills them. A 13-month-old R454B Carrier that's already having problems? That's a warranty call, and you should be mad.

What to Tell the Dispatcher When You Call

Don't just say "it's not cooling." Give them something to work with.

  • Is the outdoor unit running? Is the fan spinning?
  • Is the indoor blower running?
  • What's the temp at the supply register compared to the return?
  • When did it stop working — peak afternoon or all the time?

That 10 seconds of info can be the difference between a guy showing up with a capacitor and a guy showing up with a full recovery rig and three hours of labor you didn't need.

The Thermostat Settings That Actually Matter Right Now

Stop setting it to 68 and walking away. You're just running up the power bill and stressing the compressor.

Set it to 78 when you're home. Set it to 82 or off when you're gone during the day if you can stand coming home to a warm house for 20 minutes. Use a programmable or smart thermostat to bring it back down an hour before you get home. The "recovery" time is real — it takes a while to pull the heat back out of the walls and furniture.

And for the love of everything, don't switch it to "emergency heat" or mess with the fan settings unless you know what you're doing. I've seen people run the AC with the fan set to "on" instead of "auto" and wonder why the house feels muggy. You're just recirculating humid air after the compressor shuts off.

What You Should've Done in March (And Can't Do Now)

Pre-summer checkups are real. Cleaning coils, checking refrigerant charge, testing capacitors, tightening electrical connections — that's all stuff that prevents failures in July. If you skipped it, you're rolling the dice.

You can't do much of that now unless you want to wait three days for a service slot. But make a note for next spring. It's cheaper than an emergency call when it's 107 outside.

The Bottom Line

If your AC's running and you're just not comfortable, lower your expectations or close the blinds. If it's actually broken — not starting, blowing warm, tripping breakers — call someone. Don't wait. The queue's only getting longer, and units that are limping along tend to fail completely when you keep pushing them.
