# How Summer Heat Cycles Are Cooking Your Asphalt Shingles Right Now

The problem isn't the heat itself. It's the cycle.

Your shingles can handle a hot day. They're rated for surface temps up to 160°F, and on a black roof in July, they'll get there by noon. What kills them is the expansion at 2 PM, the contraction at 2 AM, and doing that again tomorrow. And the day after. For three straight months. The asphalt gets softer when it heats, the mat flexes, the adhesive bond creeps a little. Then it all contracts when the sun drops. Do that a thousand times a summer, and you're not looking at wear — you're looking at fatigue failure.

I pulled a roof last August that was only eleven years old. Warranty was for twenty-five. The shingles looked fine from the street, but up close, every tab had lifted corners. Not wind damage. Heat cycling. The attic was a convection oven, no ridge vent, two gable vents that didn't move any air. The deck was 140°F at 4 PM. That roof cooked itself to death from both sides.

What Actually Happens When Shingles Heat-Cycle

Asphalt shingles are a sandwich. You've got a fiberglass mat soaked in asphalt, coated with more asphalt on top, then ceramic granules pressed into that top coat. The bottom gets a layer of adhesive and sometimes a selvage strip. When the sun hits, the whole assembly heats up, but not evenly. The black asphalt absorbs, the granules reflect a little, the deck below radiates back up. The temperature difference between the surface and the back of the shingle can be 20 degrees.

Asphalt is viscoelastic. That's a fancy way of saying it flows when it's hot and stiffens when it's cold. Every heat cycle, the asphalt softens and the shingle wants to expand. The nails hold it in place, so it bows slightly. Then evening comes, it cools, contracts, and tries to pull flat again. The problem is asphalt has memory. It doesn't snap back perfectly. Over weeks and months, you get permanent deformation — curling at the edges, cupping in the center, or that wavy look where every course is slightly convex.

Worse, the bond between the shingle layers depends on a thermoplastic sealant strip. That strip is designed to soften and fuse the shingles together after installation. But if your attic is running 150°F all summer, that sealant stays soft. The shingles never lock down hard. Wind gets under the tabs easier. You see lifted corners on calm days, which shouldn't happen on a roof that's sealed right.

The Attic Problem Nobody Wants to Talk About

If your attic ventilation is garbage, you're cooking the shingles from below *and* above.

I've measured attic temps north of 160°F in poorly vented spaces. That's hotter than the shingle surface on some roofs. The heat has nowhere to go, so it just sits there, radiating into the roof deck all day and half the night. The deck stays hot, the underlayment breaks down, and the back of the shingles bakes. Meanwhile the sun is hammering the top side. You're heat-cycling the shingle through a bigger temperature range, more often, with higher peaks. It's brutal.

The fix is basic: you need intake at the soffits and exhaust at the ridge. Continuous soffit vents and a ridge vent the full length of the peak. Gable vents don't cut it unless the attic is small and the gables are big. Power vents are fine if they're sized right, but they cost money to run and they'll pull conditioned air out of the house if your ceiling isn't airtight. Which it probably isn't.

I see a lot of older houses with no soffit vents at all, just a couple of gable louvers. The attic breathes about as well as a Ziplock bag. If that's your situation, adding ventilation isn't optional. It's the difference between getting fifteen years out of a roof and getting twenty-five.

Shingle Curling and What It Tells You

Curling comes in two flavors. Edge curl is when the sides of the shingle lift up. It usually starts at the butt edge and works its way up. That's thermal cycling and age — the asphalt has dried out, lost flexibility, and the shingle is trying to shrink. If you're seeing it on a roof that's under ten years old, your attic is too hot or your shingles were garbage to begin with.

Center curl, or cupping, is when the middle of the shingle sinks and the edges stay down. That can be a manufacturing defect or it can be moisture — the mat absorbed water, swelled, dried out, and shrank. But if it's widespread and the roof is young, I'd bet on heat. Specifically, I'd bet on a poorly ventilated attic turning the shingles into potato chips.

You can't uncurl a shingle. Once it's deformed, it's done. You can baby it along with some roof mastic under the lifted edges to keep water out, but that's a bandaid. The roof is telling you it's dying.

Granule Loss Isn't Just Age

Granules are the ceramic coating that keeps UV off the asphalt. Lose them, and the asphalt oxidizes fast. You'll see it turn gray or chalky. The shingle gets brittle.

Some granule loss is normal. New shingles shed loose granules for the first year. After that, you should see very little in the gutters. If you're finding piles of granules every time it rains, something's wrong. Heat cycling accelerates granule loss because the thermal expansion and contraction breaks the bond between the granule and the asphalt. The hotter the roof runs, the faster it happens.

I pulled a sample off a roof last month — south-facing slope, no shade, attic like an oven. The shingles on the south side were almost bare. North side still had most of their granules. Same roof, same batch of shingles, installed the same day. The only difference was heat exposure.

There's no reversing it. Once the granules are gone, you're on borrowed time.

What You Can Do This Summer

If your roof is already showing heat damage, the work is done. You're not fixing curled shingles in July. But you can stop it from getting worse on the rest of the roof or on the new one you'll have to put on in a couple years.

Check your attic ventilation now. Go up there on a hot afternoon. If it's uncomfortable to breathe, your roof is suffering too. Look for intake vents at the soffits and exhaust at the ridge or gables. If you've got one but not the other, you don't have ventilation — you have vents that don't move air. Balanced intake and exhaust is the only thing that works.

If you're missing soffit vents and the soffits are enclosed, you can retrofit them. It's not a fun job, but it's doable. Drill a hole every couple feet, install circular soffit vents, repeat for 200 feet of eave. Or rip the soffit down and install perforated material. Either way, it's cheaper than a roof.

Ridge vents are easier. Most ridge caps come off without a fight. Cut a slot along the peak with a circular saw set shallow, install the ridge vent, cap it, done. If you've got a roofer doing work this fall, add it then. Don't wait until the next roof. The one you have now will thank you.

Don't install a roof in a heat wave. I know guys who'll tear off and relay in 95-degree heat because the schedule says so. The shingles are too soft. The sealant strips melt onto the bundle below and tear when you separate them. The adhesive is so gummy that it's hard to get clean lines. And if you're walking on fresh shingles in the afternoon sun, you're leaving footprints in the asphalt. Let the roof cool down, work early mornings, or wait for a milder stretch. Shingles installed in extreme heat don't seal as well and don't last as long.

Pay attention to shingle choice if you're replacing soon. Not all shingles handle heat the same. Lighter colors reflect more, run cooler, last longer in hot climates. That's not marketing — it's physics. A white or tan roof will run 20 degrees cooler than black. If you're in Texas or Arizona or anywhere the sun is mean, color matters. Some manufacturers also make shingles with higher-temp asphalt or better granule adhesion. They cost more. They're worth it if you're planning to stay in the house.

The Warranty Won't Save You

Heat damage is wear, and wear isn't covered. Your twenty-five-year warranty covers manufacturing defects — shingles that delaminate out of the bundle, adhesive that fails on the whole batch, granules that fall off in year two. It doesn't cover shingles that curled in year twelve because your attic was hot and you live in Georgia.

I've seen homeowners try to file claims on heat-curled roofs, and they get laughed off the phone. The manufacturer will send someone out, they'll take photos, measure the attic temp, check the ventilation, and write a report that says "normal wear accelerated by environmental factors." Translation: your problem, not ours.

If you want the roof to last as long as the warranty says, you have to give it the conditions the warranty assumes. That means proper ventilation, proper installation, and a realistic understanding that Texas summer sun is not the same as Oregon drizzle. The warranty doesn't account for climate. You have to.

It's Already Happening

If your roof is ten years old and you're in a hot climate, it's heat-cycling right now. Today. This afternoon. You can't stop the sun, but you can stop trapping heat under the deck. Check the attic. Add vents if you need them. If you're seeing curling or granule loss already, start planning the replacement and make sure the next one is installed with enough ventilation to survive.

Heat doesn't take a summer off. Neither should you.
