# Your AC Can't Keep Up With the Heat — What's Actually Broken and What Isn't
Bottom line: If your system is running full-time and the house won't drop below 76°, that might not be a failure — it might be physics. But if it's struggling to hit 80° or tripping on high pressure, you've got real problems.
I've been in attics all week here in southern Illinois, and the callback pattern is consistent. Homeowner swears the unit is shot, thermostat says 78°, and the compressor has been screaming for six straight hours. Half the time there's nothing wrong with the equipment. The other half, it's a $12 filter or a refrigerant leak that's been seeping since April.
Let's sort the real failures from the unrealistic expectations, because your power bill doesn't care about the difference.
The 20-Degree Rule Nobody Wants to Hear
Here's the thing most guys don't explain when they're selling you a system: a residential AC is typically sized to pull your house down about 20° below ambient on a sustained load. Maybe 22° if it's new, tight, and the installer actually did a Manual J instead of just matching tonnage to square footage.
So when it's 98° in Hillsboro and your thermostat is parked at 76°, your system is doing exactly what it was designed to do. It's not broken. It's maxed.
If you try to set it to 68° during a heat wave, you're not "pushing" the system — you're just making the compressor run nonstop while the house bleeds heat faster than the coil can reject it. The setpoint becomes meaningless. I've seen guys burn out contactors this way, and I've seen homeowners call for service on units that were working perfectly, just up against thermodynamic reality.
That doesn't mean you're stuck. But it does mean your expectations need to match your equipment and your building envelope, and most people don't want to hear that when they're sweating.
The Stuff That's Actually Killing Your Cooling
Forget the 20-degree limit for a second. If your AC can't even hold 80° when it's 95° out, or if it used to keep up fine in past summers and suddenly doesn't, you've got one of these issues.
Clogged Filter or Return Blockage
This is the one everybody rolls their eyes at, and it's also the one I find on about 40% of no-cool calls. A 1" disposable filter should be changed monthly during summer if you're running hard. If it's a 4" pleated media filter, you can stretch to 90 days, maybe.
When the filter loads up, airflow drops. When airflow drops, your evaporator coil freezes or your suction pressure crashes, and either way the system stops moving heat. You'll feel it blowing, but it's not *moving enough air*.
Check the filter. Don't just glance at it — pull it out and hold it up to a light. If you can't see through it, it's done.
Also check your return grilles. I found one last week that had a beach towel stuck to it from the back side. Homeowner had no idea. System was working great once we cleared it.
Low Refrigerant
This is the one that costs money. Your system doesn't "use up" refrigerant the way a car burns gas — it's a closed loop. If you're low, you have a leak.
Symptoms: frozen lines at the outdoor unit, hissing anywhere in the system, or the AC runs forever but barely cools. Sometimes the compressor will short-cycle on low pressure. You might see oil stains near a joint or a service port.
You can't DIY this one, not legally and not safely. A real tech will find the leak, fix it, pull a vacuum, and recharge to spec. If someone just "tops it off" without fixing the leak, you're paying to air-condition the outdoors until it leaks out again. I've seen that scam plenty.
One thing to know in 2026: we're deeper into the R-410A phasedown now. Stock is tighter and prices are up. If you've got an old R-22 system (we're talking 15+ years), a compressor failure or a big leak might be the moment you replace instead of repair, because refrigerant alone can run you $150/lb and climbing. Do the math with your tech.
Dirty Condenser Coil
The big box outside has to reject all the heat your house is dumping into the refrigerant. If the coil fins are packed with cottonwood fuzz, grass clippings, or that white fluff from the catalpa trees, it can't.
You'll see high head pressure, the compressor will run hot, and in bad cases the unit will trip on high-pressure lockout. It'll try to start, run for 90 seconds, shut down, and try again. That's a protection mode, not a failure — but if you ignore it, it will *become* a failure when the compressor cooks.
Rinse the coil from the inside out with a garden hose, gentle pressure. Don't use a pressure washer unless you want to fold every fin flat and really trash it. A coil comb and a soft brush work for the stubborn stuff. If it's bad enough that you can't see through the fins, call someone with a pump sprayer and actual coil cleaner.
Undersized or Failing Ductwork
This one sneaks up. Your ducts lose about 20–30% of your airflow to leaks, restrictions, and bad design on a typical install. If they're in an attic and the seams have been baking for a decade, they're worse.
You'll know it's ducts if some rooms are ice caves and others won't cool at all, or if the system runs fine but only half the air that should be coming out of the vents actually is. Also if your attic flex duct looks like a stepped-on slinky or has that silver tape peeling everywhere.
Sealing ducts is a painful job and most homeowners won't do it themselves because it means crawling through a 140° attic in July. But it's one of the highest-return fixes you can make. Mastic and mesh, not foil tape. Hire it out if you value your knees and your sanity.
What You Can Try Right Now
You're not calling a tech at 9 p.m. on a Friday unless it's truly dead. Here's the short list for self-triage.
- Check the filter. Seriously.
- Look at the outdoor unit. Is it running? Is the fan spinning? Any ice on the lines?
- Clear any junk, weeds, or mulch away from the condenser — it needs a foot of clearance all around.
- Make sure all your vents are open. Closing vents to "save energy" actually screws up your system balance and can freeze the coil.
- Bump your thermostat up to 78° and leave it there. Let the system catch up instead of fighting it.
- Close your blinds on the south and west side during peak sun. You're trying to reduce the load, and every BTU you keep out is one the AC doesn't have to move.
If it's still not holding after that, or if you see ice, hear grinding, or smell anything electrical, shut it down and call somebody. Running a dying compressor just makes the repair worse.
The Stuff You Should Have Done in April
I'm not going to beat you up for skipping a spring tuneup, but I will tell you that most of the failures I'm fixing this week would've been caught then. A $120 maintenance call in May finds the leak, the contactor with one pitted leg, the start cap that's drifting out of range, and the txv that's starting to stick. A no-cool call in July costs you three times that, plus a couple days of misery waiting for parts or an opening on the schedule.
You can't rewind the calendar, but make a note for next year: schedule HVAC maintenance in April, not June. The good guys are slammed by June. April, they've got time to actually check things instead of just running from callback to callback.
When to Replace Instead of Repair
If your system is 12–15 years old, runs on R-22, and just failed in a way that needs a compressor or a coil, you're at the edge. Get two opinions and actual numbers: cost to repair, cost to replace, and what your efficiency gain looks like on the new unit. SEER ratings have come up enough that a new 16 SEER system will usually pay for the difference in five to seven years if you're replacing a 10 SEER dinosaur.
Also factor in that you're not getting another 15 years out of a patchwork repair on an old system. You're getting two, maybe five if you're lucky. If the repair quote is more than half the replacement cost, I'd replace.
Thermostat Settings That Actually Help
Set it and leave it at 78° during the day. Cranking it down to 72° doesn't cool the house faster — your AC only has one speed (unless you've got a variable system, and if you did, you'd know it). All you're doing is making the compressor run longer.
If you've got a programmable or a smart thermostat, don't get cute with big temperature swings. A five-degree setback when you're gone is fine. Letting the house climb to 85° and then trying to recover to 70° when you get home is not. You'll blow past your target temp and the system will run flat-out for hours.
And no, running the fan to "ON" instead of "AUTO" doesn't help. It just recirculates air without conditioning it and runs up your power bill. Leave it on AUTO.
Is It Worth Throwing Money at an Old System?
Depends on what "old" means and what failed. A contactor, a cap, a txv? Fix it. Those are consumables. A compressor on a 10-year-old system? Maybe, if the rest of it is solid and you're keeping the house another few years. A compressor on a 20-year-old system that's already had the blower motor replaced twice? You're pouring money into a hole.
The industry rolled through a phase-out and a SEER jump in the last decade. Equipment from 2010 is legitimately worse in every measurable way than what you'd install today — efficiency, capacity modulation, and especially refrigerant availability. That doesn't mean you replace on schedule like a fleet vehicle, but it does mean you don't heroically resuscitate something that's used up its design life.
I've been in plenty of basements where the homeowner is proud they kept a 1990-something Trane limping along with baling wire and prayers, and yeah, that's possible — but the power bill tells a different story.

If your AC is running nonstop and only getting you to 78° while it's 100° outside, that's annoying but it's not a failure. If it can't hit 80°, or if you're seeing ice, hearing grinding, or smelling burning dust that won't clear after twenty minutes, shut it down and get someone out. Don't wait until the compressor actually seizes or you'll be buying a whole system in the middle of the hottest week of the year, and that's when you pay top dollar and wait three days for an install slot.
The calls I get that I actually respect are from the people who say "it's struggling and I want someone to find out why before it quits completely." That's the mindset. You've got maybe two weeks left in the worst of the summer heat. Get ahead of it.
