If you're reading this in the dead of another brutal summer, you already know what 95°F at 10 a.m. feels like. What you might not know is that your attic is probably sitting at 150°F or hotter, and that heat is killing your shingles from both sides — UV hammering from above, trapped air roasting them from below.

The short answer: Yes, extreme heat absolutely damages asphalt shingles. It accelerates every failure mode they have. Curling. Granule loss. Cracking. Blistering. All of it happens faster when the mercury climbs and stays there.

This isn't theoretical. Walk a dozen roofs this week and you'll see it: edges lifting, granules washing into gutters, shingles going brittle years before the warranty says they should. The stuff matters now because we're in the thick of it, and because fixing ventilation issues *this* season can claw back years of service life.

What Heat Actually Does to an Asphalt Shingle

Asphalt shingles are a petroleum product with a mineral surface. They're designed to handle sun. They're not designed to handle endless heat cycling with no break.

When temps spike, the asphalt mat expands. When it cools at night, it contracts. Do that a few hundred times a summer for a decade and the material starts to lose flexibility. It gets hard. It gets brittle. Then it curls.

Curling starts at the edges — they lift up or fold under. That's not just ugly. Curled edges catch wind, let water wick underneath, and create entry points for driven rain. Once a shingle curls, it's done. You don't flatten it back out.

Granule loss comes next. Those ceramic granules do two things: reflect UV and protect the asphalt from direct sun. When heat dries out the asphalt binder, granules start letting go. You'll see them in the gutters, in the downspout splash, piled up where the runoff hits the ground. Bare spots mean the mat's exposed, and exposed asphalt breaks down fast under UV.

Then there's blistering. If moisture gets trapped in the shingle during manufacture or installation, heat can turn it to vapor. That vapor tries to escape, bubbles up under the surface, and pops. You get a blister — a weak spot that'll crack open the first time someone steps on it or a branch falls.

Poor Attic Ventilation Makes It All Worse

Here's where most roofs actually die early: the attic.

A poorly vented attic in summer can hit 160°F, easy. I've measured hotter. That heat radiates up through the decking and cooks the underside of the shingles while the sun cooks the top. It's an oven. The shingle never gets a break.

When you trap that heat, you're not just shortening shingle life — you're also driving up cooling costs, warping decking, and baking the hell out of anything in that attic space. Ventilation isn't optional. It's the difference between a 20-year roof and a 12-year roof.

The math is simple: you need intake (soffit vents) and exhaust (ridge vent, gable vents, or powered fans). Air comes in low, picks up heat, exits high. If either end of that loop is blocked or undersized, the system fails.

I see it all the time — somebody insulated the attic, great, but they stuffed batts right into the soffit channels and choked off the intake. Or they have plenty of soffit vent but no ridge vent, so there's nowhere for the hot air to go. Either way, you're cooking shingles.

If you're up there this summer and the attic feels like you opened an oven door, you've got a ventilation problem. Fix it now. Add soffit vents, cut in a ridge vent, install baffles to keep insulation from blocking airflow. It's not glamorous work, but it pays back in roof life.

The Stuff You'll Actually See

Walk your roof — or get someone to do it if you're not comfortable up there — and look for these:

Curling. Edges lifted or turned under. Common on the south and west faces where sun exposure is worst. Once it starts, it spreads.

Granule loss. Bare patches, shiny spots, or whole areas where the color looks faded and worn. Check your gutters. If there's a layer of grit in there, that's your roof coming apart.

Cracking. Shingles that split straight across or develop spiderweb cracks. Brittle shingles crack. They don't seal. They let water in.

Blistering. Raised bubbles on the surface. Press on one — if it's soft or pops, that's a blister. If it's already popped, you're looking at a hole.

None of this happens overnight. It's cumulative. But in a bad heat summer — the kind we're having more of — you can lose a couple years of service life in one season.

What You Can Do About It Right Now

Check your attic. Go up there on a hot afternoon. If it's unbearable, your ventilation is inadequate. Look for:

  • Blocked soffit vents (insulation, debris, paint)
  • Missing or undersized ridge vents
  • No baffles between rafters
  • Exhaust fans that aren't running or are undersized

Add intake and exhaust as needed. A good target is 1 square foot of net free ventilation area per 150 square feet of attic floor. Balanced intake and exhaust.

Inspect the roof surface. Look for the damage I listed above. If you're seeing widespread curling or granule loss, you're on borrowed time. Start planning a replacement before you get leaks.

Clean your gutters. Not just for drainage — look at what's in there. A little grit is normal. A thick layer of granules means your shingles are shedding fast.

Don't power wash. I've seen homeowners blast their roof with a pressure washer to "clean" it. All you're doing is stripping granules and driving water under the shingles. If it's dirty, leave it. If it's covered in moss or algae, use a low-pressure treatment or hire it out.

Consider color next time. Lighter shingles reflect more heat. It's not a huge difference, but if you're in a hot climate and you're replacing soon, it's worth speccing a lighter color. Dark roofs get hotter, period.

When the Roof's Actually Done

If you're seeing curling on more than 20% of the roof, significant granule loss, or multiple shingles cracking and breaking, you're at end of life. Patch what you have to, but start budgeting for a tearoff.

Asphalt shingles don't heal. They don't get better. Once they've dried out and curled, that's it. You can replace a few here and there if you've got leftover bundles that match, but if the whole roof is going, you're just buying time.

A 30-year shingle in a hot climate with poor ventilation might give you 15. A well-vented roof in a moderate climate might give you 25. It's not the shingle's fault most of the time — it's how the system was built and maintained.

The Warranty Won't Save You

Every callback I've seen this summer has the same story: homeowner bought a roof two years ago, it's already curling, they call the company, get told the labor warranty expired and the manufacturer won't cover "thermal distress" or "improper ventilation."

Read your warranty. Most of them exclude heat damage, wind damage unless it's over a certain speed, and anything they can pin on ventilation or installation. The 50-year shingle is a 50-year *material* warranty with about a thousand exclusions. The labor warranty is usually one to five years, and that's the one that actually matters because labor is where the cost is.

If your roof is failing early and you think it's a defect, document everything. Photos, attic temps, ventilation setup, dates. You'll need it. But don't count on the warranty making you whole. It rarely does.

Not Much You Can Do This Second

If your roof is already heat-damaged, there's no magic fix. You can't un-curl a shingle. You can't glue granules back on.

What you *can* do is stop making it worse. Fix the ventilation. Keep the gutters clean. Don't let debris pile up and trap moisture. Plan for replacement before you get leaks, because once water's coming in, you're fixing decking and underlayment and insulation too, not just shingles.

And next time, when you're spec'ing the job, think about the system — not just the shingle. Make sure the ventilation is right. Make sure the underlayment is decent (Polyglass just launched their Tri-Strata stuff with better heat resistance, for what it's worth). Make sure the crew isn't nailing in 100°F heat when the shingles are too soft to seal right.

Heat kills roofs. Slowly, steadily, every summer. You can't stop the sun, but you can stop trapping the heat it generates. That's the play.
