Not strictly a furnace task, but fall is when it shows up. Walk around your doors and windows. Feel for drafts. If cold air is leaking in, your furnace is working overtime to compensate.
Weatherstripping is cheap and annoying to install but absolutely worth it. A tube of caulk and a few hours will cut your heating bill and make the house feel warmer without touching the thermostat. Bonus: you'll stop hearing that weird whistle when the wind picks up.
When to Stop and Call a Pro
Some furnace tasks are not DIY unless you're a licensed HVAC tech.
- Anything involving gas lines. You don't troubleshoot gas. You call.
- Electrical work inside the furnace. Replacing a capacitor or a blower motor is not a YouTube-and-a-Saturday project unless you know what you're doing.
- Cleaning the burners or flame sensor. You *can* learn this, but if you've never done it, a tech should show you first. A misaligned sensor or a scratch on a burner creates problems.

If you ignore fall furnace prep, nothing dramatic happens in October. The trouble shows up later.
A clogged filter becomes a failed blower motor. A dirty flame sensor becomes a no-heat call on the coldest night of the year. An unchecked exhaust vent becomes a CO hazard. And all of this happens when you least want to deal with it and when techs are charging emergency rates.
