Your Roof Is Cooking Right Now — And You Probably Can't See It Happening

Most homeowners watch their deck warp and their lawn go brown in July, but nobody thinks about the shingles until one flies off in a storm. That's the problem with heat damage: it's slow, it's invisible from the ground, and by the time you notice curling edges or bald spots, you're already a few seasons into failure.

I've been tearing off roofs for fifteen years. The ones that die early? Nine times out of ten, it's heat and ventilation that killed them, not the hurricane everybody wants to blame.

What 160°F in Your Attic Actually Does

Right now, if you've got black or dark brown shingles and your attic ventilation is marginal, you're probably sitting at 150–160°F up there on a sunny afternoon. That's not a guess — I've logged it with a temp gun more times than I care to count.

Asphalt shingles are designed to handle heat. They're not designed to *bake* all day, cool off at night, and repeat that cycle for ninety straight days. The asphalt itself gets brittle. The mat underneath dries out. The granules that protect the shingle from UV start letting go because the bond weakens when the asphalt turns to something closer to a cracker than a flexible membrane.

Shingle curling starts at the edges. You'll see the tabs lift or the butt ends curl upward like somebody peeled a sticker halfway off. That's the shingle trying to shrink as it loses volatiles — oils, basically — and it can't shrink evenly when it's nailed down in the middle. Poor attic ventilation makes this worse because trapped heat cooks the shingle from below *and* above. It's a two-sided assault.

Granule loss comes next.

You'll see it in the gutters first: a pile of grit that looks like coarse sand. Some granule loss is normal in the first year or two as loose manufacturing excess washes off. What's not normal is a steady stream of granules five or eight years into a 30-year shingle's life. Once the granules go, UV hits the asphalt directly, and that shingle is on a countdown. A year, maybe two, before it's shot.

The Ventilation Problem Nobody Wants to Hear

Here's the thing about attic ventilation: most houses don't have enough, and most roofers who aren't thinking past the next invoice won't tell you.

Code calls for 1 square foot of net free vent area per 150 square feet of attic space, or 1:300 if you've got a balanced system with intake at the soffits and exhaust at the ridge. Sounds simple. In practice, half the houses I see have soffit vents packed with insulation, painted-over gable vents, or a ridge vent that's too short and fighting with three old box vents that should've been pulled when the ridge went in.

When hot air can't escape, it sits. And sits. The roof deck heats up, the shingles cook from underneath, and you lose years of life without ever seeing a windstorm.

Check your soffit vents this week. Physically look. If you can't see daylight or feel airflow, they're blocked. That's your intake. No intake, no system — the ridge vent is just a decorative slot.

If you've got an accessible attic, go up there on a hot afternoon (early, before it hits peak temp, unless you enjoy heatstroke). If it's 95°F outside and your attic is 160°F, you've got a ventilation problem. If it's only 10–15 degrees hotter than outside, you're in decent shape.

What Curling and Granule Loss Actually Mean

Curling isn't just ugly. It breaks the seal between shingle layers, lets wind get under the tabs, and creates pathways for water to wick up under the shingle during a rain. I've seen curled roofs that never leaked — until they did, all at once, because one storm finally got the angle right.

Granule loss is a one-way trip. You can't recoat a shingle. Once the granules are gone and the black asphalt is showing through in patches, you're looking at replacement, not repair. I've had customers ask if there's a sealant or a spray. There isn't. Not one that works.

The worst part? This damage is cumulative. You're not going to wake up one morning and see your whole roof curled. It happens over two, three, four summers, and every summer makes the next one worse because the shingle is weaker going into it.

What You Can Do About It Right Now

If your roof is already curling or showing granule loss in big patches, I'm not going to lie to you: you're shopping for a roof, not a fix. But if you're early in the game, here's what actually moves the needle.

Get your ventilation sorted. That means enough intake at the soffits, enough exhaust at the ridge or high gables, and no old vents fighting the system. If you've got a vented ridge and old box vents, cap the box vents. They short-circuit the airflow and kill the whole setup. This is a job for a roofer who actually cares about building science, not the guy who just wants to sell you shingles.

Trim back tree branches that sit on or scrape the roof. Shade helps with heat, but branches hold moisture, scrape off granules, and dump debris that clogs valleys and gutters. The tradeoff isn't worth it.

If you're looking at a roof in the next year or two anyway, consider lighter-colored shingles. I know, everyone wants charcoal or weathered wood because it looks sharp. A light gray or tan roof runs 20–30°F cooler in direct sun, and that difference adds up over a decade. It's not sexy, but it's real.

You can also look at shingles with higher IR reflectance ratings — the cool-roof stuff. They cost a bit more, but in a climate that's pushing 95°F for half the summer, they earn it back in shingle life. I've seen ten-year-old IR shingles that look like five-year-old standard shingles. It's not magic, just physics.

The Insurance Angle You Should Know

If you've got a claim and the adjuster is looking at heat damage — curling, granule loss, brittleness — good luck. That's wear and tear, not storm damage, and insurance doesn't cover it. I've watched homeowners argue this and lose every time.

Storm damage is impact: hail dents, wind tears, punctures from debris. Heat damage is aging. The fact that your neighbor got a roof after a hailstorm and you didn't doesn't mean your roof is fine — it means your roof is failing for a different reason, one that's on you.

That's why catching this early matters. If you wait until the shingles are cooked, you're paying out of pocket.

Is It Worth Worrying About?

If you're in the South or Southwest, yeah, absolutely. If you're running dark shingles and iffy ventilation, double yeah. If you're in Minnesota with a white roof and a well-vented attic, you've got other things to lose sleep over.

But if you just bought a house and you don't know the attic situation, or you've noticed shingle edges starting to lift, or your gutters are full of granules after every rain — don't wait for a leak to tell you there's a problem. Leaks are the final symptom. By the time water's coming through the ceiling, you've already got rot in the deck and probably mold in the insulation.

I'd rather you spend two hundred bucks on a roofing company to come out and check ventilation and shingle condition now than twelve grand on an emergency reroof next spring when a storm finishes off what the heat started.

Your roof is taking a beating right now. Most of them can handle it. Some can't. Know which one you've got.
