South Florida Heat Is Cooking Your Roof Right Now — Here's How To Tell

August in South Florida means your roof is getting hammered. Not from a storm, not from wind — from 95-degree days, full sun from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and an attic that's probably pushing 160°F while you read this. I've been pulling shingles off houses down here for 15 years, and the number of callbacks I get in late summer for "sudden" leaks or curling tabs that weren't curling in May? It's not sudden. It's heat damage, and it's cumulative.

The short version: If your attic ventilation is garbage, your shingles are baking from below and above at the same time. They're going to curl, crack, and shed granules faster than the warranty math ever predicted. And you won't notice until it's already ugly.

What Heat Actually Does to Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles have a temperature ceiling. Most are rated to handle surface temps around 160–180°F before the adhesive and the asphalt itself start breaking down. That sounds like a lot until you realize a black or dark gray shingle in direct Florida sun can hit 170°F by noon. Add trapped attic heat radiating back up through the decking, and you're cooking that shingle from both sides.

Here's the damage sequence:

1. The asphalt gets soft. Shingles sag, tabs lift, sealant strips fail. You lose the interlock that's supposed to keep wind and water out. 2. Then it gets brittle. When it cools at night, the now-cooked asphalt doesn't flex back. It stays stiff. Next heat cycle, it cracks instead of bending. 3. Granules let go. The binder holding those ceramic granules to the surface? Heat kills it. You start shedding grit into the gutters. Once the granules are gone, UV tears straight into the mat. Game over.

Shingle curling is the visible tell. Edges lift, tabs cup upward or downward, and suddenly your roof looks 20 years old when it's only 8. That's not wear — that's heat stress and usually a ventilation failure underneath.

Attic Ventilation Is the Thing Nobody Checks Until It's Too Late

I'll say it flat: most attics in South Florida are underventilated, and a bunch of them are straight-up blocked. Blown insulation piled up against the soffits. No ridge vent because the builder cheaped out and threw in two static box vents instead. Gable vents that look good but move zero air because there's no low intake to pull from.

When you don't have a proper low-to-high airflow path, heat just sits there. It has nowhere to go. The attic becomes a convection oven, and that heat radiates up through your roof deck into the back of the shingles. You're baking them from the inside. Combine that with a south-facing exposure getting full UV, and those shingles are toast by year ten instead of year twenty.

Check your soffit vents. Pull the covers off and look. If you see insulation blocking them, pull it back. If there are no soffits vents at all, you've got a problem that needs fixing before you do anything else.

Ridge vents work, but only if they're actual vents and not just decorative caps some hack nailed on without cutting the ridge open. I've seen that twice this month alone. Box vents are better than nothing, but you need enough of them — one per 150 square feet of attic space as a rough guide, and they need to be paired with real soffit intake.

Powered attic fans? Mixed bag. They move air, sure, but if your intake is weak, they'll just pull conditioned air out of your house through ceiling penetrations. I'd rather see good passive ventilation done right.

Granule Loss and Why It Matters More Than You Think

You know those sparkly bits in your gutters that look like coarse sand? That's your roof dying.

Granules are the armor. They block UV, they shed water, they give the shingle its fire rating. Once they're gone, the asphalt is exposed. It dries out faster, cracks easier, and stops being waterproof. You'll see black streaks — that's the bare mat showing through.

Brand-new roofs shed some granules in the first few months. That's normal. What's not normal is losing big patches of granules after a few summers, especially along the ridge or the south-facing slope. That's heat damage, possibly combined with a defective product. (The Owens Corning warranty voids that keep popping up on forums this year? A lot of those are granule adhesion failures in hot climates. If you've got OC Duration or Oakridge shingles from certain production runs, you might want to document what you're seeing now.)

If you're shedding granules heavily and the roof is under ten years old, file a warranty claim before the window closes. Take photos. Bag some samples. Manufacturers will fight you, but you've got a better shot now than in year twelve when they'll just say it's "normal wear."

What You're Actually Looking For This Summer

Get up there or get someone up there who knows what they're looking at. You're checking for:

  • Curling along the edges or center of tabs. Slight waviness is early-stage. If tabs are lifting an inch or more, you're past early.
  • Cracking or splitting. Usually runs parallel to the ridge or along the tab lines. Once you see cracks, those shingles are done — they won't reseal and they'll let water under.
  • Bald spots. Patches where granules are gone and you see black asphalt or the fiberglass mat. That's endgame.
  • Lifted or unsealed tabs. You should not be able to lift a tab by hand. If you can, the adhesive failed or never bonded.

Inside, pop into the attic mid-afternoon. It should be hot, but if it's *oppressively* hot — like, you can't stand to be in there for more than a minute — your ventilation is shot. Also look for:

  • Rusty nails poking through the deck. That's condensation, which means your ventilation isn't moving enough air year-round.
  • Water stains on the underside of the deck, especially near the ridge or valleys.
  • Daylight coming through the roof (obviously bad, but you'd be surprised).

Synthetics and the Heat Question

I keep seeing the industry push on how synthetic underlayment and "advanced" shingles handle heat better. Some of it's real, some of it's marketing.

Synthetic underlayment (the stuff that goes under the shingles) does handle UV and heat better than old felt paper, and it won't wrinkle or buckle in an attic that's running hot during install. If you're re-roofing, spend the extra $200 on synthetic. It's worth it.

As for shingles themselves, there are "cool roof" shingles with reflective granules that stay a bit cooler. They work — maybe a 10–15 degree drop in surface temp. But they don't fix a ventilation problem, and they cost more. I'd rather see you spend that money on proper intake and exhaust vents and run standard shingles than buy cool-roof shingles and leave the attic a hotbox.

The newer laminated architectural shingles do hold up better than old three-tabs in heat, mostly because they're thicker and the lamination adds some structure. But they're not magic. Cook them long enough and they'll still curl and crack.

The Play Right Now

If your roof is over ten years old and you're in South Florida, you're in the danger zone for heat damage. If you haven't had a real inspection in the last two years, get one. Not a free "inspection" from a storm chaser looking to file an insurance claim — an actual roofer who'll tell you the truth.

If you've got curling, granule loss, or an attic that feels like a pizza oven, don't wait until October to deal with it. By then the damage is done for this season. Fix the ventilation now if that's the root cause — it's cheaper than a reroof and it buys you years.

And if you're shopping for a new roof, don't just go with the cheapest bid. Ask what they're doing for ventilation. Ask about underlayment. Ask if they're actually going to install drip edge and starter strips or if they're going to hack it. The install matters more than the shingle brand in this climate.

Heat's not dramatic like a hurricane. It just grinds your roof down, one summer at a time.
