# Your Panel Might Be the Weak Link When That AC Fires Up
I pulled three breakers out of panels last week in northwest Georgia. All feeding AC units. Two were loose on the bus bar, one had heat marks on the terminal. None of the homeowners knew until the compressor wouldn't kick on and they called sweating through a 94-degree afternoon.
Summer loads here in Ft. Oglethorpe are not theoretical. The AC cranks. The kids are home running every screen in the house. Somebody fires up a welder or a table saw in the garage because it's too hot to work outside. Then the main trips or worse, doesn't trip when it should.
You've got maybe three weeks before the real heat hits peak afternoon draw. Walk your system now.
The AC Circuit: Where Most Trouble Lives
Your central air is probably the single biggest load on the panel — 20 to 60 amps depending on tonnage and vintage. If it's on a tandem breaker because someone wanted to squeeze it in years ago, that's a problem waiting to cook. If the breaker's been nuisance-tripping all spring, that's not a quirk. It's telling you something.
Pull the deadfront if you know what you're doing. Look at the breaker feeding the condenser. Tight on the bus? Any discoloration on the plastic housing or the wire insulation at the lug? That tan or brown tint is heat. It means resistance, which means a failure in progress.
A lot of older homes around here have 100-amp services with original breakers from the '80s. They work until they don't. The AC startup surge is hard on worn contacts. I've seen breakers that'll hold 30 amps all day but won't handle the inrush when the compressor cycles. Swap it. A new Square D QO or Eaton BR runs $12 to $40 depending on the amp rating. Do it before you're dealing with it at 6 p.m. on a Friday.
And for the love of everything, if you've got a Federal Pacific panel, stop reading and call somebody. Those things are documented fire hazards. Breakers fail to trip. I won't even open one without pointing a camera at it first.
Generator Hookups Done Wrong
Every other callback I get in July involves a generator someone rigged up themselves. Usually it's a transfer switch that was never torqued down, or it's no transfer switch at all — just a suicide cord back-feeding through a dryer outlet.
If you're planning to run a genset this summer because the grid's been shaky or you just want the peace of mind, do it right. A proper interlock kit on the panel or a manual transfer switch. Not a double-male cord. That'll kill a lineman or fry your panel when the utility comes back and you've got two sources trying to sync out of phase.
Generator sizing matters more than people think. You need to cover startup surge, not just running watts. A 3-ton AC can pull 5,000 to 6,000 watts on startup. Add the fridge, a couple lights, maybe a sump pump, and you're deep into an 8,000-watt genset minimum. I see guys buy a 3,500-watt unit at the box store and wonder why it bogs down and won't hold the load. Underspec'd from jump.
The NERC summer reliability outlook this year is flagging high demand overlap with maintenance outages and low wind periods. California ISO is publishing summer readiness updates like they expect trouble. We're not California, but the grid's all connected. When there's strain somewhere, it ripples.
Ceiling Fans and the Wiring Nobody Checked
Everybody wants a ceiling fan installed when it gets hot. I've done four this month already.
Half the boxes they're going into were never rated for fan support. A plastic pancake box held in with two drywall screws will not hold a 50-pound fan that wobbles. It'll come down. I've seen it. The box has to be listed for fan support — usually metal, screwed or strapped to a joist. If yours is blue plastic and lightweight, it's a light-fixture box. Replace it.
And for some reason, the fixture that was there before is always wired with 14-gauge on a 15-amp breaker, but some cowboy decided to add a switch loop with 12-gauge because that's what was on the truck that day. Mixed wire gauges in the same circuit. It's not code and it's asking for confusion down the line when someone troubleshoots it.
The other thing: fan-rated dimmer switches are not the same as light dimmers. If you're controlling a fan and a light on the same unit, read the fan documentation. A lot of them use frequency-control modules that do not like being fed through a standard Lutron dimmer. The motor hums, the control board fries, and you've voided any warranty.
What Actually Fails in Summer
Heat kills electronics and insulation faster than anything. The breakers get hot. The wire gets hot. Connections expand and contract and work loose. I've pulled neutral bars that had half the screws just finger-tight. When you load it, that connection heats, arcs, melts.
Aluminum wiring, if you've got it, gets worse with heat cycling. The oxidation layer builds up, the resistance goes up, the heat goes up. It's a loop. If your house was built in the '60s or '70s and you've never had the aluminum connections serviced with anti-oxidant paste and proper torque, put it on the list.
GFCI outlets in unconditioned spaces — garages, crawls, outside — see moisture and heat together. The test button stops working or the thing trips randomly because the electronics are cooked. Swap them every five years whether they look bad or not. They're $15. A failed GFCI that won't trip when it should is worse than no GFCI because you think you're protected.
What I'd Do This Week
Walk the panel. Flip every breaker off and back on while you're standing there with a flashlight. Feel for any that are stiff or spongy. Those are on the way out.
Check the main lugs where the service drop comes in. Loose? Corroded? If you don't feel comfortable pulling the meter, call Georgia Power or an electrician. But somebody should eyeball those terminals at least every few years.
Test your transfer switch if you've got one. Simulate a power-out. Make sure the interlock works, the genset actually starts, and you're not about to discover the thing's been rusted shut for three years.
Look at the AC disconnect at the condenser. Any wasp nests? Burnt contacts? Water intrusion? Pull the fuse block out (power off at the panel first) and check for pitting on the blades.
If you've got backstabbed outlets — the wires just shoved into the holes on the back instead of wrapped around the screws — and you're handy, pull them out and redo them properly. Backstabs loosen with heat and vibration. They're the number one cause of outlet failure and the occasional house fire that "just started in the wall for no reason." Screw terminals only.
And for what it's worth, if your main panel is in a garage or unconditioned space and it's full-sun in the afternoon, consider some shade. I've measured panel interiors at 140°F in summer around here. That's hard on breakers rated for 40°C ambient. A piece of plywood or sheet metal overhead with an air gap does more than you'd think.
When to Call It
If the panel's hot to the touch, if you smell burning plastic, if breakers trip and won't reset, if you see any sparking or hear any buzzing louder than a faint hum — stop. Don't reset it again. Kill the main and call someone.
This stuff doesn't usually fail gracefully. It works fine until it works badly all at once.
Summer in North Georgia is not the time to find out your 40-year-old panel can't hang. Check it now. You've got the time. You won't have it in two weeks when it's 98 degrees and every electrician in Catoosa County is booked out three days.
