Summer 2026 is hitting hard, and if you think your roof is just sitting up there passively taking it, you're wrong. Heat is breaking down asphalt shingles as you read this—baking them from above, cooking them from below if your attic ventilation is garbage, and starting a cascade of failure points that'll bite you in two years when you're wondering why your ten-year-old roof already looks like hell.

I've been on enough roofs in July and August to know the signs. The granule loss that starts subtle. The curling that sneaks up on south and west exposures. The attic that's a literal oven because someone thought two gable vents were enough. Let's talk about what summer heat actually does to a roof and what's worth doing about it now, not when you've got a callback in October because the shingles are already shot.

What Heat Does to Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are petroleum products with a mineral granule surface. UV and heat are their natural enemies. When temps on a roof surface hit 160°F—and they will, easily, on a black or dark gray roof in full sun—those shingles start losing volatiles. They get brittle. Flexibility goes first, then the mat starts to check and crack.

The granules are your first line of defense. They reflect some heat, protect the asphalt from direct UV, and give the shingle its color. Lose those granules and you're exposing bare asphalt to the sun. It accelerates from there.

Curling comes next. Shingle edges start to lift or cup. Sometimes it's the tab ends curling up, sometimes the whole shingle wants to potato-chip on you. Part of that is the shingle drying out and shrinking unevenly. Part of it is thermal cycling—hot all day, cool at night, repeat forever. Poor attic ventilation makes it worse because you're baking the shingle from underneath at the same time the sun is hammering it from above.

That double-whammy is what kills roofs early in the South and Southwest. I've seen roofs in the DFW area that didn't make it to twelve years on a twenty-year shingle because the attic was a convection oven and nobody caught it until the shingles were already curled and cracked.

Attic Ventilation Is the Thing Nobody Checks Until It's Too Late

Your attic should not be 160°F. If it is, your ventilation is inadequate or blocked or both.

Here's the deal: hot air rises. In summer, that superheated air needs a way out at the ridge or high on the gable ends, and you need cooler intake air coming in low—soffit vents, ideally continuous. If you've got intake but no exhaust, or exhaust but blocked soffits, you're not moving air. It just sits there and cooks.

I see this all the time. Insulation shoved right up against the roof deck, blocking the soffit vents. Bathroom or dryer vents dumping into the attic instead of outside. Ridge vent installed but the ridge cut wasn't opened all the way, so it's decorative. Gable vents painted shut. You name it.

Grab a thermometer and go up there on a hot afternoon. If it's more than 130°F, you've got a problem. Aim for something closer to 110-120°F max on a really hot day. That 30-40 degree difference is the lifespan of your shingles.

And yes, this impacts your cooling bills too, but I'm a roofer, not an HVAC guy—I care that your shingles are being pressure-cooked from the underside and you don't even know it.

Warning Signs You Can See From the Ground

You don't need to get on the roof to spot trouble. Walk around the house with a pair of binoculars or use your phone camera zoomed in. Look for:

  • Granule loss: Bare spots where the shingle looks darker or shiny. Check your gutters too—if you're sweeping out cups of granules every time it rains, that's a red flag.
  • Curling or cupping: Shingle edges lifting up or the centers pushing down. It'll be most obvious on the sides that get afternoon sun.
  • Cracking: Actual splits in the shingle. Sometimes they follow the mat weave, sometimes they're random thermal cracks.
  • Color fading: Uniform fading is just age, but blotchy fading can mean the binder is failing unevenly.
  • Blistering: Little bubbles in the shingle surface. Pop one and you'll find it's hollow underneath—moisture or volatiles trying to escape.

If you're seeing curling and granule loss on a roof that's only six or seven years old, ventilation is the first place I'd look. That's not normal wear. That's heat damage.

What You Can Do Right Now

Fix your ventilation. Seriously. If your attic is cooking, adding more shingles on top in ten years won't fix it—they'll just cook too. Get someone who knows what they're doing to calculate your net free area and make sure you've got a balanced system. Intake low, exhaust high.

The rule of thumb is 1 square foot of net free ventilation area per 150 square feet of attic floor if you've got a vapor barrier, 1 per 300 if you don't, and you want it split roughly 50/50 between intake and exhaust. That's code minimum. More is often better, especially in the South.

If your soffits are blocked, clear them. If you don't have continuous soffit vents and you're relying on those dinky little rectangular vents every four feet, consider upgrading when you re-side or repaint. If your ridge vent looks like it was installed by a crew that didn't care, have someone check that the ridge is actually cut open underneath.

Inspect and document. Take photos now. If you've got early curling or granule loss, document it. If it gets worse over the next year or two and you're still in the warranty period, you'll want that evidence. Shingle warranties are mostly garbage—pro-rated, labor not covered, caused by "improper ventilation" gets you out of everything—but if you've got a manufacturing defect, photos help.

Don't power-wash your roof. I still see homeowners doing this. You'll blast off granules and wreck the shingles faster than the sun ever could. If you've got algae stains (the black streaks), there are low-pressure treatments that work, but that's cosmetic. It's not a durability issue.

Check your flashing while you're thinking about it. Step flashing at chimneys and sidewalls, valley flashing, drip edge—heat cycles expand and contract metal, and sealants dry out. I've been seeing chatter about flashing leaks this season, which makes sense. Flashing that was marginal two years ago might be leaking now. If you're calling someone for a ventilation eval, have them check the flashing too.

Is It Worth Re-Roofing Early?

Depends on how bad it is. If your shingles are ten years old, curling hard, and losing granules, and your ventilation sucks, you're looking at a decision: re-roof now and fix the ventilation at the same time, or band-aid it and hope you get another two or three years.

I'd fix the ventilation either way. If the shingles are still mostly intact—curling at the edges but no cracking, granules thinning but not gone—fixing the ventilation might buy you a few more years. If they're already cracked and brittle, you're done. New roof.

Don't layer over failing shingles, by the way. You're just hiding the problem and making the next tearoff more expensive. And if your ventilation was the issue, the new layer will cook just as fast.

The Bottom Line

Summer heat kills roofs slowly, then all at once. The damage is happening right now, and most of it is invisible until it's not. Attic ventilation is the single biggest factor you can control, and it's the thing most people ignore until they're writing a check for a new roof and wondering why it didn't last.

Get in your attic. Check your vents. Look at your shingles. If you're seeing curling and granule loss on a roof that should have another decade in it, don't wait. By the time it looks bad from the street, you're already past the point where a little maintenance would've saved it.
