Asphalt shingles aren't designed to stay flexible forever. They're petroleum products with a mineral coating, and heat degrades both components in ways that stack up.
Granule loss comes first, usually. Those ceramic granules aren't just for color — they're UV armor. When they start washing down your downspouts in chunks, the asphalt mat underneath is exposed. Now it's cooking in direct sun with no protection, and the degradation accelerates hard. I've seen roofs lose 30% of their granules in three Texas summers and still look "fine" from the curb.
Curling follows. The shingle edges lift because the mat underneath is shrinking as it dries out. This isn't just cosmetic. Curled edges catch wind, let water run underneath, and create entry points for every other failure mode. You'll see it worst on the south and west faces where sun exposure peaks.

Warning Signs You Can Actually Check Right Now
You don't need to get on the roof to spot ventilation problems in summer. Walk your attic at 2 PM on a hot day. If it feels like you opened an oven door, you're in trouble.
Touch the underside of the roof deck. If it's too hot to leave your hand on, your shingles are getting hammered from below every single afternoon.
Look at your soffits from outside. Can you see through the vents, or are they painted shut? Are they blocked by insulation from inside? I've been on a hundred jobs where the insulation crew just packed batts right up against the roof deck and choked off all the intake air. Nobody caught it during the walk-through.
Count your exhaust vents. Those little box vents every eight feet look like they're doing something, but they're not. You want continuous ridge vent or enough roof-mount exhaust to actually move air. The rule is one square foot of net free area per 150 square feet of attic space, and most houses I see are running at about half that.
What Failure Looks Like Mid-Summer
Curling you can see. Granule loss shows up as dark streaks or bald spots where the mineral coat is gone. But the early stuff is harder.
Check your shingle edges. Run your hand along a few tabs on the side of the house that gets afternoon sun. If they feel stiff and brittle instead of having a little flex, the asphalt is already dried out. If they're starting to cup or lift, you're watching the beginning of the end.
Look in your gutters. Lots of granules during spring runoff is normal for the first year or two. Still seeing heavy granule wash every time it rains at year five? That's accelerated aging.
Check for blistering. Looks like bubbles or raised spots on the shingle surface. That's trapped moisture or volatiles in the mat expanding from heat. Once a shingle blisters, it's compromised. The blister pops, you get a divot, water sits there, and now it's a leak waiting for a wind-driven rain.
The community chatter this week is full of "is this OK" posts with photos of obvious problems. The answer is usually no, and the reason is usually heat damage that got ignored for three summers until it couldn't be ignored anymore.
Why This Summer Might Be Worse
2026 is tracking hot. The extended forecasts for the back half of summer are calling for above-average temps across most of the country, and we're already seeing heat dome patterns that park over a region for a week at a time.
I'm not a climate guy, but I've been doing this long enough to notice the pattern: the summers are hotter, the roofs are failing younger, and the manufacturers haven't changed the product much. A 30-year shingle installed in 2015 is not making it to 2045 in DFW or Phoenix or even Atlanta. Not anymore.

Get up there or pay someone who will. Look at shingle condition on the south and west exposures. If you're seeing curling, heavy granule loss, or brittleness, you're in the back half of the roof's life and summer is accelerating it.
Check the attic. Seriously. This is a $20 flashlight and ten minutes. If it's a sauna, you have a ventilation problem. Call somebody who actually understands airflow, not just someone who nails shingles.
Document everything. Photos, notes, dates. If you're thinking about an insurance claim for storm damage down the road, you want evidence that the roof was in reasonable shape before the event. Heat damage can void storm claims because the adjuster will call it "normal wear."
If you're a roofer and you're quoting a re-roof this summer, walk the attic and explain the ventilation situation before you talk about shingle color. Half the callbacks I see are because somebody laid new shingles over an attic that's still a convection oven. The new roof fails young, the homeowner is pissed, and now you're explaining why it's not a workmanship issue.
The Real Cost
Shingle replacement isn't cheap, and it's not getting cheaper. Material costs are up, labor is up, and insurance companies are getting stingier about what they'll cover.
But here's the thing: a roof that should last 20 years and only makes it to 12 because of heat and ventilation problems costs you 40% more over the life of the house. That's real money.
And the damage isn't just to the shingles. I've torn off roofs where the decking was delaminating, the underlayment was powder, and the rafters were showing heat stress. That's not a re-roof anymore. That's a deck replacement, and now you're into serious money.
Spend the afternoon in your attic. Look at your shingles. If something seems off, it probably is. Summer is when the damage happens. Don't wait until fall to deal with it.
