Time to Open That Panel Before the Lights Go Up

I had a callback last November—guy threw a thousand feet of LED holiday lights on the house, fired up the heat pumps for the first cold snap, and popped the main breaker three times in one evening. Turned out his 100A panel was already oversubscribed before the holidays even started. That's not how you want to spend the night your in-laws show up.
Fall is when you find out if your electrical system can handle winter. And if you're planning to hang lights, run space heaters, or just cook a turkey without dimming the whole block, now's the time to get eyes on that panel.
Why Panel Inspections Matter Right Now
Your panel doesn't care about your schedule. It cares about load. And fall is when the load starts stacking: HVAC systems switch from cooling to heating (which often means higher draw), holiday lighting goes up, people plug in block heaters and garage heaters, ovens run longer.
A panel inspection isn't about finding problems. It's about finding problems *before they find you.* Loose connections don't show up as tripped breakers right away. Sometimes they just sit there getting warm. By the time you notice a hot breaker or smell burning plastic, you're past inspection territory and into repair-or-replace.
What we actually look for:
- Breakers that feel warm to the touch, even without obvious load
- Corrosion on bus bars or connections (common in damp basements or coastal installs)
- Double-tapped breakers—two wires under one lug, a hack move that causes arcing
- Panels with no room left for new circuits
- Breakers that trip under normal loads, which means they're either shot or the panel is undersized
Fall and winter are easier months to schedule this stuff. We're not slammed with AC calls or pool pump circuits, so you'll actually get on the calendar without waiting three weeks.
Holiday Lighting Load: Do the Math Before You String the Lights
LEDs pulled most of the danger out of holiday lighting, but people forget that they also made it possible to hang *way more lights.* A single 15A circuit used to handle maybe three strands of old incandescents. Now you can daisy-chain twenty LED strands and still stay under 80% of rated capacity. So people do. And then they plug in an inflatable snowman, a projector, and a heated birdbath on the same circuit.
Here's the thing: that circuit also powers the outdoor outlets, the porch lights, and sometimes half the garage. You're not loading 15 amps of Christmas lights. You're loading 15 amps of Christmas lights *plus whatever else is on that branch.*
If your breaker trips when you flip on the display, don't just reset it and call it temperamental. That's the breaker doing its job. Either redistribute the load or add a circuit. Do not, under any circumstances, swap in a higher-amp breaker to "solve" nuisance tripping. That's how you turn a $200 service call into a structure fire.
We've all seen the holiday light setups where someone ran twelve extension cords to one outlet. That outlet is rated for 15 or 20 amps total, not per plug. A power strip doesn't add capacity. It just splits what you already have.
Panel Change: When Inspection Isn't Enough
Some panels are fine. Some need a circuit added. Some need to go.
If you've got a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, it needs to go. Not eventually. Now. Those breakers are documented failures—they don't trip when they should, which is the whole point of having a breaker. I've pulled FPE panels where the breakers were welded to the bus bar from heat and still hadn't tripped. That's not a quirky vintage feature. That's a hazard.
Signs you're looking at a panel change, not just an inspection:
- Frequent breaker trips with no obvious overload
- Lights dim every time the fridge compressor kicks on
- The panel is warm to the touch
- Buzzing or crackling sounds from inside the box
- You're adding major loads—EV charger, workshop subpanel, central AC—and there's no room
- The thing is 40 years old and you're already rewiring half the circuits anyway
Most panels last 25 to 40 years if they're not abused. But "lasting" and "safe" aren't the same thing. I've seen 30-year-old panels with bus bars corroded to hell because they were installed in a damp crawl space. Technically functional, but you wouldn't want to be downstream of that connection when it finally lets go.
A 200A panel upgrade runs $2,000 to $4,000 depending on permit costs, service entrance work, and how much of the existing wiring needs to be redone to meet current code. That's not cheap. It's also not optional if the alternative is a panel fire or a failed inspection when you go to sell.
The Stuff You're Probably Putting Off
GFCI and AFCI protection. If your house was wired before 2008, you probably don't have AFCI breakers in the bedrooms. Code didn't require them. But they catch arc faults—the kind caused by damaged wire insulation, loose connections, or a nail through a cable—before those faults start fires. Adding them during a panel upgrade is a no-brainer. Retrofitting them into an old panel that's already tight on space is a pain, but it's worth doing if you're keeping the panel.
Grounding and bonding. Older homes sometimes have grounding that's... let's say creative. Grounds tied to water pipes that have since been replaced with PEX. Ground wires that stop halfway through the house. A panel upgrade is the time to fix that and actually run proper grounds back to the service entrance.
Whole-house surge protection. For about $300 installed, you can add a surge suppressor right at the panel. It won't stop a direct lightning strike, but it'll clamp down on the voltage spikes that come in through the service line and slowly kill your electronics. I've had customers lose $5,000 worth of equipment to a surge that a $300 device would've absorbed.
Do It Before the Cold Really Hits
Once we're into December, everyone wants electrical work done yesterday. Holiday lighting went wrong, a heater tripped a breaker, the oven's on a circuit that can't handle the load. At that point you're paying emergency rates and waiting for an opening that might not come for days.
Fall's the window. Inspect now, upgrade if you need to, and you'll spend the holidays running whatever you want without wondering if you're about to blow a breaker in front of your guests.
And if you open that panel and see double-taps, scorched breakers, or a Federal Pacific sticker, don't wait for New Year's to deal with it. Some upgrades shouldn't make the to-do list because they should already be done.
