Start With the Dumb Stuff (Because It's Usually Not Dumb)
Breaker first. Always. A surge during a brownout can trip the disconnect or the breaker at the panel, and the system shuts itself down rather than frying the board. I've rolled up to jobs where that was it — homeowner swears they checked, they didn't, you flip it, you're done in four minutes.
Thermostat next. Batteries if it's got them. Check that it's actually set to COOL, not off or some weird schedule the customer fat-fingered during a 3am bathroom run. Sounds basic. It is. Still catches people.
Then walk the condensing unit outside. Is it running? Humming but not spinning? Dead silent? Listen for that telltale click of the contactor pulling in. If you hear the click but the fan doesn't start, you've got a capacitor or a seized motor. If you hear nothing, you're looking at low voltage issues, a blown fuse on the board, or a contactor that gave up.
Clear the coil while you're out there. Cottonwood, grass clippings, some kind of blown insulation from a neighbor's roof — I pulled a whole grocery bag out of one unit last week. If the coil's packed, airflow's done and the head pressure's climbing until something shuts it down on safety.
When It's Actually Broken
Dirty filter will kill cooling performance faster than almost anything else, and right now in peak season, filters are loading up in half their usual time if you've got the windows open or you're in a dusty ZIP code. Starve the evaporator of air and it ices over. Once it's frozen, you're not moving heat and the compressor's just making noise.

What You Can't Get Right Now
Here's the part that matters in July 2026: lead times on some parts are still a mess, and every supplier's out of the common stuff because everyone's breaking at once. Kontrol boards for certain Carrier and Goodman series are backordered two weeks. OEM TXVs, compressors for older Trane units, even run capacitors in the 45+5 size — I've had to cross-ship from three towns over.
You might have to rig a temporary fix or pull a part off another unit to get someone cool tonight, then do the proper repair when the part shows up. That's the reality right now. Customers get it if you're straight with them. They don't get it if you disappear for ten days.
And if you're a homeowner reading this: when the tech says "I can get you a universal board but the OEM's two weeks out," understand that the universal often works fine but you're making a call on warranty coverage and longevity. I'd wait for the OEM if it's only a few days and you've got a window unit to get by. If it's July and you're in Phoenix, you take the universal.
Spot the Trouble Before Summer (Except It's Already Summer, So This Is For Next Year)
The homeowner advice articles love to talk about "catching problems early" like you're supposed to run gauges on your own system in April. You're not going to do that. But here's what actually works:
Strange noises in May mean something. Rattling, squealing, a compressor that sounds labored. Weak cooling when it's only 78 outside means you're in trouble when it's 98. Higher power bills with no usage change means the system's working too hard.
And smells — never ignore smells. Electrical burning, musty mildew from a clogged drain, hot dust cooking off a blower motor. Your nose knows before the system fully fails.
But we're past that now. It's peak season. If it's going to break, it already did or it's about to.
Thermostat Settings That Actually Matter
You'll see a lot of "set it to 78 and leave it alone" advice, and that's not wrong for efficiency, but it's not the whole story. If you've got an undersized or aging system, you're better off running it steady at 76 than doing big swings where you crank it to 68 when you get home and ask it to pull down 15 degrees in an hour. You'll trip on high head, you'll short-cycle the compressor, and you'll never actually get comfortable.
Programmable stats are great if you use them right. Terrible if you don't. I've seen people schedule a 10-degree recovery at 5pm every day and wonder why the system's on its back by mid-July. If you're gone all day, let it drift to 80, not 85. Give it a fighting chance.
And for the love of everything, don't mess with the fan setting unless you know why you're doing it. AUTO is correct for most systems. ON just runs the blower nonstop, which in humid climates means you're blowing unconditioned air across a wet coil and making the house feel clammy even though the temp's okay.
When to Call It and Just Call Someone
If you've checked power, replaced the filter, cleared the coil, and it's still not cooling, you're into real diagnosis. You need gauges, a meter, and the knowledge to read what they're saying. If you don't have that, stop. Throwing parts at it (capacitors, contactors, thermostats) is expensive and usually wrong.
And if you find refrigerant low, do not just top it off and walk away. It doesn't just evaporate. It's leaking. You're going to be right back here in three weeks, and now you've wasted gas, time, and the customer's money. Find the leak, fix it, then charge it properly.
I had a callback this week on a unit another guy had "repaired" by adding two pounds without checking for leaks. It had a pinhole in the evap coil. Took me an hour to find it. He'd have known in ten minutes if he'd pulled a vacuum and watched the gauge.
The Real Bottom Line
Summer breakdowns suck for everyone. They're hot, they're urgent, parts are scarce, and customers are stressed. The ones you can fix in fifteen minutes, fix. The ones that need parts or a full diagnostic, be straight about timeline and cost.
If you're the homeowner, understand that every tech in your county is slammed right now, and the guy who can "come right now" might not be the guy you want touching your equipment. A day or two wait for someone competent beats a bad repair that costs you double next week.
And next spring — this April, really — get it serviced before it's hot. Every year people wait until June, and every year we're too buried to squeeze in a maintenance call that would've caught the bad cap or the slow leak before it became a no-cool at the worst possible time.
For now? Start with the breaker and work your way through the list. You'll solve half of them before you even pull a screwdriver.
